Breno
So lots of my friends keep telling me to read these two series of books, both of them look super interesting, but i'm not sure which one I should buy first, so i'd like to have a second opinion on this, has anyone read both? which one do you recommend? sologdin
read lawrence now. it's a complete series that cooks right along, and author is just getting started.the first dune text is a classic of speculative fiction that everyone should read eventually, but readers have controverted the value of the sequels, and most everyone hates the finale, written by surrogate authors. author is nevertheless deceased and doesn't need the attention. Ser Scot A Ellison
Sologdin,The Dune Chronicles remain unfinished. Herbert died before he could finish them. The other books don't really exist.
sologdin
bren, one will also find a minority report on the dune books, as exemplified by scot, supra. it is a reasonable position.
strixflash
The first two novels in The Dune Chronicles are really good but afterwards the story starts getting dragging & boring. I would suggest you to read first book if you like excellent world building. But believe me sequels are not worth reading. Broken Empire is one of the best character driven series. The main character is a dark anti-hero type character and he should be a good change if you are tired of farmboy protagonist. At the end it's upto you on what you like. I would suggest you to read a sample chapter from both series on internet and decide which series you want to read.
Ser Scot A Ellison
The older I get the more I appreciate the last three books in the Dune Chronicles. I love their subelty and subtext.
Breno
Thanks for the answer everyone, Dune seems to be an incredible book, seems unique, and deep, i'll make sure to read it later, i'll go with The Broken Empire, been looking for an Anti-Hero for quite a while, tired of those sissy heroes that are hold back by their morals and can't get shit done, it seems that the main character won't let me down in this. I wasn't sure if I should buy it because, I heard that the world in the series isn't developed very well, together with secondary characters, everybody likes a well made, detailed, complex world, and other characters besides the protagonist :)
Calibandar
Dune is a much deeper and more intriguing book. The Broken Empire is fun, fast-paced Fantasy which imo reads well but not interest me on the level of say Bakker. Martin, Kay, Hobb, Williams, Abercrombie or Lynch. Ser Scot A Ellison
The best stories have layers that take years even decades to appreciate. Dune is one of those.

mgambino
Read both, but Dune first... and as everyone has said, there are only six dune books, everything else is a lie.

Dune is outstanding. Dune Messiah is horrible. Children of Dune is very good. I could never get into God Emperor of Dune, and stopped reading the series at that point. On no account read the rip-off books written by Kevin Anderson and Brian Herbert. I read Prince of Thorns, and was conflicted. On the one hand, it's very well-written, a real page-turner. On the other hand, I absolutely detested the protagonist, so I haven't read nay further.
Mark Lawrence
I've given this matter careful consideration ... and, on balance, I feel you should read the Broken Empire trilogy first. Also, you should buy ten copies.

Drekinn
Read Broken Empire first because it's an easy/entertaining read, and save Dune for last.
