Fisher House -- The Ronald McDonald House for the Veterans Admin. Hospitals

My fiance is a veteran and had surgery the other day about 100 miles from home at a VA hospital. There are about 60 VA hospitals that have a Fisher House that provides housing for families of a veteran receiving treatment far from home.

This is like a boutique hotel with about 15 private rooms that are spacious and tastefully appointed. There is a common sitting room and dining room, and a big assed kitchen with all sorts of foods stocked that residents can have to snack on or prepare whole meals with.

All this is provided free of cost, saving the veteran and their family a ton of money while their loved one is being cared for in the hospital. And the people running the house are fabulously caring.

As a matter of fact, with just a couple of exceptions, all the staff at the VA hospital that we've experienced in not only this visit, but most other visits as well, are wonderful. The level of concern, caring and friendliness is over the top.

For all the shit that the VA gets over its wait times (and rightfully so--their red tape is everything you hear about), I can't say enough good things about the healthcare professionals that actually treat the patients.

If you're so inclined, check out The Fisher House's webpage. They are not-for-profit and accept donations of dollars, frequent flyer miles for their Hero Miles program, as well as hotel rewards points for a similar program to help families at VA hospitals without a Fisher House. I'll be leaving a modest donation plus a jar of pickles for the fridge on my departure. I was really surprised there were no pickles, what with the tons of tuna cans they had!

Yeah, the Fisher House's are great. A lot of the cancer patient's we get come from 100s of miles away and they have to stay near us for months at a time sometimes. If it wasn't for the Fisher House these people would have to pay a lot of money to stay somewhere else. The only time a patient ever complained about ours, that I know of, was when they had a small bedbug infestation. The Fisher House put the patient up at a hotel until the problem was resolved.

The families at the Fisher House are great as well. We had one veteran admitted here and his family came and dumped off his mother who was suffering from dementia. It became clear to the inpatient staff after a couple of days that she couldn't fully provide care for herself and we were unable to do anything about it legally. We convinced the on-duty staff sergeants to make sure that some one picked her up at the Fisher House every morning and took her back each night. The staff at the Fisher House were only there during the day and a couple of us talked to some of the other families staying there and they took the numbers to the nursing station so we could be called if there were any issues. One of the family members took it upon herself to make sure the old lady was eating and helped her with her laundry. Without the help of the families, that poor lady would have been on her own. Shame on her own family for treating her and her son the way they did.
