Gawen Westerling's Revenge.

I don't see Gawen as a stupid man, no would he forget what happened at the Red Wedding. I know in the book we are informed that he apparently had no idea of his wife's involvement but after her brother gets Castamere and all I think he will start asking question. And since he lost a son at the RW I don't think he will let it go quietly. So with Jayne and Edmure being returned to the Westerlands, and the Blackfish disappearing I was hoping to get the opinions of other readings on Gawen and the role he could play in the Winds of Winter. Personally I feel that we will be seeing more of him and that he could be an ally to Edmure or Blackfish. I know he is a Lannister bannermen but after the RW and the collapse house Lannister I don't think he is loyal as it is stated he is.

So please share what you think he will do if he reappears in the next book, and how you think he will assist or how he will get his revenge?

I doubt Gawen will be getting revenge. I think Cat and the Blackfish are going to kill Sybell and Rolph, making Robb's squire, Rollam Westerling, Lord of Castamere. Jeyne will likely be freed by the Blackfish along with Edmure in TWOW prologue. The men who killed Raynald will most likely die fighting for Black Walder or Edwyn once Lord Walder dies.

But didn't Jaime increase the amount of soldiers that traveled with Edmure and Jeyne? I highly doubt Blackfish will be able to take on so many guards, which is why I am thinking that Gawen will play a role in freeing them or further. Like getting Edmure back into the Riverlands to idk start some sort of take back.

He did, and instruct them* to kill them** at the first sign of trouble, I believe. So at the moment any sort of rescue during transit seems unlikely - which doesn't mean it's impossible of course.

* = the guards

** = the hostages

Unfortunately these are exactly the type of scenarios which I believe we are unlikely to see due to the time constraints of the books...I agree though if it's going to happen the attempt to free edmure is the most likely place to happen

Well everyone keeps on forgetting that Blackfish is a legendary knight aswell, people keep giving Barriston Selmy benefit of doubt despite his age but nobody gives the same respect ot the Blackfish.

People forget his brilliance as Robb's main adviser, he was the main architect behind The Whispering Wood. He could easily come up with something brilliant to free Edmure and his Queen.

We get the views of Jamie as a squire enthralled by the achievements of Ser Brynden Tully during the siege of Riverrun and we know tht Jamie aspired to be a knight like Ser Arthur Dayne. Him looking upto The Blackfish should tell us that The Blackfish should be in the same league as Selmy. We really can't comment on his martial status as we know nothing about his achievements. But we know this much that as knight he has survived to the age of either 58 or 55 yrs which tells us a great deal about his martial skill. We do not knw much about his deeds in the War of the Nine Penny Kings but we knw that he gained a lot of renown like Ser Barriston Selmy.

I feel like the blackfish is a bit underrated character and i'm dying to knw to about his history and what he will do in the upcoming books!!!

I disagree: It's in acknowledging the Blackfish's brilliance and skill that there's any chance at all of Edmure/Roslyn getting rescued. As outlined above, the odds of not just defeating the massive escort, but doing so before either gets killed are really not very good - especially since the escort is explicitly instructed to kill them if there's any sign of shenanigans or escape/rescue attempts.

Of course we have no idea where the Blackfish currently is, but it's a fair bet that if he's alive, well and in a position to do anything pro-active, freeing his nephew will be high on his list of priorities.

I think if Gawen was going to do something he would have already done it.

I do love the idea of Nymeria attacking them, and there is a possibility she would know not to hurt Edmure and Jeyne. She did know Cat, but I don't think it will happen, I think Edmure will probably sit out the rest of the war in the Rock, until House Lannister totally falls and then will be freed.

Is it perhaps possible that Raynald, Gawen's son, survived the RW and might look to take some personal revenge?

Bear with me, I know it's a long shot, but it is specifically mentioned that Raynald's body was not found. He was hit by numerous crossbow strikes and a trail of blood led to the river. Clearly, had he managed to swim enough distance and find some shelter and helpful people, he would still need a fair bit of recovery time.

I just thought it was worth mentioning that he is only presumed dead currently. Obviously, if he did die while trying to swim away to safety, which is probable, it would be difficult to find his body so it makes sense that it wouldn't have been found.

Also, he's probably too minor a character for it to be worth bringing him back. Mind you, I understand Jeyne will be appearing in TWOW...

I wonder how the BF could get them out...obviously with the Brotherhood but what kind of tactic...night attack with anguy taking out the guards around Jeyne? it would have to be incredibly quick and accurate or else pretty unrealistic

House Wrestling only could provide about 20 plus Knights, they were too weak to do anything by themselves, and other noble houses has no respect for them

Damn unlikely. But he may try anyway, turning Edmure and Jeyne into martyrs when shot by 20+ arrows each.

Nymeria actually has the best chances, not being perceived as an attempt to free him.

Oh, the other noble houses do indeed respect them, out of their history.

By the way, these 20+ knights are what they have left after providing men to Tywin's and Jaime's host.

I am ALL for revenge of the RW conspirators. But I don't think Gawen is stupid enough to do that. Their branch could've easily ended up like the Reynes and their survival is dependent on their ability to obey and show loyalty. They're hanging on by a thread and w/o Robb or having his heir they don't have any cards left to play. They're at the Lannisters mercy as long as the Lannisters are still in power. If they didn't live smack dab in the middle of lion territory it might be easier but I don't think he has a choice if he wants his family to survive.

Actually they are damn close to the Riverlands, anything but central.

But yes, they'd need a protector.

The correct word is ancient history, even upstart like House Frey was greatly upset when Robb choose dauther of house Westering over them

A mere century. Which isn't much in Westeros. Or Europe, for that matter.

Oh I mean anguy is shown to be incredibly good with a bow. Guess it depends on how many guards are left on them at night time, how many men the brotherhood gave etc. I can't imagine a sneak tactic like you'd see in other fantasys being used.

As said above they should be safe in the west...but Stafford Lannister also left his guard down in the west and was mauled. Could we see this goat path being used again? The BF knows where it is

And I find 20 plus knights to be a credible amount especially given the bulk of men went with gawen into the two Lannister hosts

Jaime assigned 10 archers specifically to Edmure.

I am willing to bet the Westermen know about the path to now, such a weakness would not be ignored.

I doubt they contributed much it is made clear to us multiple times they are weak and poor.
