Tech advice - scanning negatives and slides

I need to get cracking on scanning all my old negatives into a digital form before it is too late and they deteriorate beyond use.

Does anyone on the board have experience with doing this for a large (i.e. not economically viable to send to a scanning service) volume of negatives.

After I get done with my stuff, there are is the family archive of slides and negatives stretching back forty years or so.

The scanner I have is a Nikon Coolscan V. Come with some bundled software from Nikon, but I am betting there are some better third party options out there.

I had a negative scanner but it no longer works on my newer computer and I am having trouble finding drivers that work with newer versions of Windows. There is no fast way of doing it. I also have 2 1/4" negs I would love to scan but that is much more costly. Use your scanner while you can. Properly stored negatives should last a really long time. As colour film came into wide use in the 60's, no one is really sure how long. B+w negs should last over a hundred years easily.

I imagine it's pricy, thought I don't know, but when I had a job where part of the duties were working with some high quality photos, negatives and slides that needed to be digitized etc with a high quality scanner I used a program called silverfish. It definitely supports negatives and has both mac and pc versions. It was the best scanner software I ever used. I don't know if it could be fast though. I used this in conjunction with photoshop (which is what I did most of the time at that job) for making sure the digital photos were also very high quality.

You might also want to contact your local library (especially academic library) and ask them about possible resources they have. Digitizing material for arhcival purposes is a huge thing for many libraries.
