Season 5: Davos

Everybody's favourite Onion Lord is sure to return in season 5 though what he will be getting up to is a matter of speculation.

There's already been a slight change from the books, in that we saw Davos with Stannis when he met Jon Snow at the Battle of Castle Black. Originally he stayed in Eastwatch before moving off to White Harbour. We know the climax of that story is that Davos is sent off to Skagos to find Rickon for the Manderlys. Only in show canon Rickon isn't on Skagos, but at Last Hearth, home of the Umbers. It seems likely that Davos's arc in season 5 will follow him treating with the Umbers (possibly some Frey pie fun), maybe a false cliffhanger regarding his death and then being told by Greatjon (who didn't attend the Red Wedding in the show) about Rickon, following a rousing speech regarding the North and how it remembers, and promising to pledge his allegiance to Stannis the Mannis. Though the point of the Manderlys telling Davos about this is for his sailing abilities, but I'm sure D&D will be able to work around this.

Alternatively, they'll scrap that storyline and have more Davos and Stannis banter on the march to Winterfell, or leaving him at the Wall for Davos/Jon and Davos/Mel, two combinations which would be rather fun to watch.

Any other ideas?

There are a number of options what Davos may do this season

1, He stays with Stannis all the way till they capture Theon. Where Theon tells them that Rickon is still alive and he sends Davos to find Rickon

2. He stays with Stannis when he leaves for WF. Davos goes with Mance to infiltrate WF, but are captured, but a Northern Lord helps him escape and tells him about where Rickon is and tells him he can count on his loyalty if he should find the boy

3. Goes with Sam, and Salladoor Saan and at the Docks hears that someone saw a boy with a direwolf, and goes to find him

4. Goes to Last Hearth, and plays out the same way as in the books except with the Umbers

I dont think we will get WH at all in the show, as there are already to many locations so D&D will try their best to try by making it happen a little differently, I think the most likely is 1

Maybe The Manderlys will be replaced by the Umbers, since they have already been established in the show. I think we will see the Frey pies and bad a$$ northern kids in one way or another.

Not sure how I feel about that, to me ADWD basically revealed that the Manderlys are master trolls. And Wyman's quote "The north remembers, Lord Davos. The north remembers, and the mummer’s farce is almost done. My son is home." sounded so much more badass because he (a guy that everyone thought was fat, lazy and soft in the head) is the one who said it. Also how are they gonna explain the ships and silver via Umbers?

Not to mention Wendel was actually seen. They never even bothered to make Smalljon a background character to die.

True, but I still have hope for the Frey Pies... they have to give us at least something. Though I guarantee you they'll keep all of Danny's 5 hour long speeches about her being blood of fire breathing lizards. :bang:

Why were the Manderlys so prominently included in the season 3 dvd extra material if they weren't even going to have one member with a single line? All of the other houses in that clip had at least one member of the house prominently featured with at least one line at some point in the series.

This is a possibility I did not consider. However, Theon doesn't know that Rickon is on Skagos. How will Stannis find that out? I figured he might find Wex instead of Manderly finding him, but Wex is not in the TV show.

How would this lord know that Rickon is on Skagos?

How would the Braavosi know that Rickon was on Skagos? Going from the North to Skagos doesn't involve passing through there.

4. Goes to Last Hearth, and plays out the same way as in the books except with the Umbers

Without Wex how would the Umbers know Rickon is on Skagos?

On the show, RIckon and Osha were sent to the Last Hearth so presumably the Umbers would be aware if they were still there or had moved on to somewhere like Skagos.

If Davos does link up with his book storyline to search for Rickon, someone affiliated with the Umbers would be the most likely individual to give him the necessary information. You probably have Umbers at Winterfell so it stands to reason that Davos finds his way there at some point (with Stannis or perhaps subbing in for Mance on the undercover mission there) and that's where he gets the info he needs to go on the Rickon mission.

It's unlikely he gets that info at the Wall and this is probably the main reason why they have Davos staying with Stannis for now, instead of the whole White Harbor deal (which along with the Manderly's has been cut from the show).

Whenever we see an indication of the Umbers, that's going to be the time where the Rickon mission is revealed. There's no other good reason why the show went out of their way to tell the audience that this is where Rickon and Osha were going back in S3.

One of the recently unveiled pictures from S5 show Jon Snow talking to Stannis with Davos standing vigilante nearby. This is most likely in episode one or two however so it doesn't reveal much about what Davos'll be getting up to.

My bet at the moment is on Davos marching with Stannis. Otherwise, there'll be no characters in that arc for people to root for (until the Greyjoys come along) seeing as the show has painted Stannis as a boring, villainous character. Perhaps when Asha/Theon come along he'll be tempted to go find the youngest wolf, if that's happening at all.

Anyway, I hope we get a Jon/Davos scene. That's an interaction I've always wanted to see in the books.
