Here we go again. A poem this time 'round.

Aboriginal Charter of Rights - Oodgeroo Noonuccal

We want hope, not racialism,
Brotherhood, not ostracism,
Black advance, not white ascendance.
Make us equals, not dependents.
We need help, not exploitation,
We want freedom, not frustration;
Not control, but self-reliance,
Independence, not compliance,
Not rebuff, but education,
Self-respect, not resignation.
Free us from mean subjection,
From a bureaucrat Protection.
Let's forget the old-time slavers:
Give us fellowship, not favours;
Encouragement, not prohibitions,
Homes, not settlements and missions.
We need love, not overlordship,
Grip of hand, not whip-hand wardship;
Opportunity that places
White and black on equal basis.
You dishearten, not defend us,
Circumscribe, who should befriend us.
Give us welcome, not aversion,
Give us choice, not cold coercion,
Status, not discrimination,
Human rights, not segregation.
You the law, like Roman Pontius,
Make us proud, not colour-conscious;
Give us the deal you still deny us,
Give goodwill not bigot bias;
Give ambition, not prevention,
Confidence, not condescension;
Give incentive, not restriction,
Give us Christ, not crucifixion.
Though baptised and blessed and bibled
We are still tabooed and libelled.
You devout Salvation-sellers;
Make us neighbours, not fringe-dwellers;
Make us mates, not poor relations,
Citizens, not serfs on stations.
Must we native Old Australians
in our land rank as aliens?
Banish bans and conquer caste
Then we'll win our own at last.

QLD state election is in few days. Haven't really paid much attention to it, any locals know which way the state is leaning these days?

Also, so much rain! Ugh. Need me some sun.

You can have some of our stinking fucking hot sun if you send some of that skywater our way.

Never complain about rain in Australia. We virtually always need rain.

On the political note, is Abbott doing everything he can to get chucked out as leader? Even the English don't like Prince Philip!

I think Abbott believes his own press. Or he's a moron. Either way, the sooner he fades into history as our worst PM ever the better.

I'm starting to think they'll actually get desperate enough to give it back to Malcolm after this kind of dumb shit that pleases no one. It also makes no sense, Consort to the Queen of England, Australia etc is above a shitty knighthood, it's not even an honour to him. You can't honour upwards.

But it's usually raining in the wrong places. More rain in the coast doesn't really help all that much. Need it more out in the west where the water catchments are. And Stubby's house.

Haha I was just thinking about this. The dude is a prince consort, surely that's higher than any knighthood, specially one from Australia!

Further to the Abbott story, he has just said this this morning:

"I accept it's been a contentious decision, I absolutely accept that. I absolutely respect people's rights to disagree with my call on this," he said.
"I respect their right to be critical, that's what you get in a democracy such as ours and I take it on the chin."
Bullshit.
This from a bloke who said on Monday that social media (where most of the criticism was posted) is nothing more than "electronic graffiti" and "should be ignored" by the press.
Does he take us for idiots?

In a word, yes. He has shown nothing but utter contempt for the Australian people since he came to be leader of the opposition but especially since forming Government. He thinks we are morons that will just accept whatever we are told.

He's fucking delusional.

The good news is that Newman looks like he'll lose his seat- it's going to be close but the momentum is building against him in Ashgrove.

Sadly, outside of Brisbane, QLD is a very conservative state. Even groups of people you would normally expect to vote Labor in other states vote LNP in QLD. Because the population distribution is more spread out, almost 60% of seats are outside Brisbane giving the LNP a huge natural advantage. I think most people expect the LNP to comfortably return to government (even though they'll probably lose lots of seats in Brisbane).

The big question is who'll be Premier, because it doesn't look like Newman will win his seat. The senior ministers are all discredited failures as former opposition leaders. It is being speculated that someone in a safe LNP seat will mysteriously resign, providing the opportunity for Newman to swoop in and win a by-election.

What I hate about Abbott is that for anyone paying attention, none of this was a surprise. He was always a fundamentalist, huge conservative who Howard used to run ramshod over any opposition in key areas. He has never had any subtlety, never shown any consideration for anyone's views, and was always extremely loyal to Howard. He wasn't called mad dog for nothing.

And then people act surprised when he got voted in and started slashing and burning.

Grrrr.

Even as a self-confessed Liberal voter at the last election, this was lunacy from Abbott. I don't understand how a seasoned politician can continue to make multiple mistakes that any common-sense person would have known to avoid. There was nothing to be gained from this Prince Philip crap and everything to be lost.

As much as I'd like to see Malcolm Turnbull in action as Liberal leader - I really think he would be excellent - the rank-and-file conservatives in the party won't have him. He was only elected leader last time because no one else was really interested and Brendan Nelson was a disaster. Most of the party probably think that he's a secret left-winger in disguise. But there's no doubt he would have some broad appeal in the electorate as a more moderate and centrist leader who would bring some much-needed updates to the party's stance on climate change and social issues.

If Abbott does get turfed (probably not now, but closer to the election and if another couple of gaffes emerge, it would be a serious possibility) the most likely candidate is probably Bishop, given that Hockey and Morrison have both completely destroyed their own public profiles and handed plenty of ammunition to their enemies.

But Morrison is well liked internally and they are both from NSW. Bishop is from WA and a woman and I think it's been made clear the party have genuine issues with that expressed as ambiguous "questions over Bishop".

Hockey has surely cooked his chances though, even if he can pin the budget on Abbott he's thrown away his affable Everyman persona that gave him any appeal with the voters.

Morrison despite being a popular performer has only been in parliament since 2007 and I can see the petty " not earned it " argument being persuasive to back benchers that have gone nowhere.

If Tony continues to fuck up as bad as this knighthood I actually think Turnbull might be a chance. They need to be desperate enough to accept what they hate, just like labour going back to Rudd last year

Hockey no doubt, but I don't think Morrison is particularly damaged. I can't name any particulars blunders on his part on par with the budget backslash or Abbott's general fuckery (Manus island riots maybe, but that'll be long past come election time), and in my experience his popularity on the right is as high as anyone else.

If it comes down to it, I'd lean towards Bishop, but wouldn't discount Morrison. Turnbull I doubt.
