Meanwhile, in Arya's milk...

I was just rereading Tyrion's trial, and I saw that one of the poisons that was reported stolen by Pycelle was called Blindeye.

And, one book later, Arya goes blind after some foul tasting milk. We know the Faceless Men like to dabble in poisons to boot.

Oh GRRM. I never realized just how many things you foreshadow.

That speech was loaded with content, he also describes the widows blood that Varys poisoned Tywin with.

Absolutely! Didn't Tyrion use that on Cercei at one point as well? Glad to see that you also believe it was actually Varys who poisoned Tywin. I've seen theories that it was someone else (e.g. Oberyn). I also believe Varys drugged and placed Shae in Tywin's chambers and placed a few weapons there within easy reach for Tyrion (but that's another debate I guess).

Wasn't that Widow's blood? I think the basilisk blood was the one Jaqen used on Weese's dog

I think so. I remember that it was basilisk blood that made Weese's dog go wildly aggressive and I think it was some sort of manticore venom concoction that Oberyn Martell used on Gregor Clegane. Nasty stuff...but it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy! :P

^ Ya that was definitely manticore venom that Qyburn says has been "thickened somehow" and then says "magic". I prefer to think of Shae being there is a nod to Tywin being the hand that built the tunnel to Chatayas. As smart as Varys is, he couldn't have known for sure Jaime was going to come after him, and after that it seems like a stretch that he would have time to drug and carry Shae around the passageways. If he did it beforehand, then Tywin was in the bathroom a hell of a long time.

So, let's see what we have...

On the table were laid a number of small jars. Pycelle was pleased to put a name to each.

Greycap,” he said in a quavery voice, “from the toadstool. Nightshade, sweetsleep, demon’s dance. This is blindeye. Widow’s blood, this one is called, for the color. A cruel potion. It shuts down a man’s bladder and bowels, until he drowns in his own poisons. This wolfsbane, here basilisk venom, and this one the tears of Lys. Yes. I know them all. The Imp Tyrion Lannister stole them from my chambers, when he had me falsely imprisoned.”

I think you are right, blindeye is what Arya has in her milk. Widow's blood is what poisoned Tywin. Basilisk venom is probably what we know as basilisk blood, the poison Jaqen used for Weese's dog, as Jon of the (Evil) dead pointed out. Jon Arryn died because of tears of Lys and his son Robert is treated with small doses of sweetsleep. The pool in the House of Black and White also has sweetsleep in the water.

So greycap, nightshade, deamon's dance and wolfsbane are left, unless one of them was in the poisonous locusts Belwas ate or on Arya's / Jaqen's coins.

Even then, at least two poisons from the list remain unused and I wonder when we'll see those in action...

This is kind of interesting. In other threads it's been proposed that Oberyn, not Varys, poisoned Tywin. I've always thought Varys was more likely because with Oberyn's reputation as a poisoner Tywin would have taken extreme precautions around him. Another point is that it's possible that the same potion was used on Tywin as Cersei, non-lethal but producing severe gasto-intestinal upset. Widow's Blood is lethal. Wolfsbane, also mentioned among Pycelle's poisons is said to induce extreme stomachache and extended privy time.

Yeah, I could get behind Varys poisoning Tywin (without expecting Tyrion to go up there and wreck shit up, he isn't omniscient).

Very interesting. Greycap is made from toadstool, I think we already saw it. It's probably made from the mushrooms Tyrion stowed away in his boot.

EDIT: I also think that we might make a guess that Nightshade has been used to poison Strong Belwas: a quick wikipedia search yielded this tidbit:

In Ancient Rome, it was used as a poison by Agrippina the Younger, wife of Emperor Claudius on advice of Locusta, a lady specialized in poisons, and Livia, who is rumored to have used it to kill her husband Emperor Augustus.

The poisoners used locusts to carry the poison, plus the whole setting was inspired by Ancient Rome (the pitfights are pretty much based on gladiatorial combat). We know GRRM has at least a passing knowledge of Roman History (the Unsullied's three spears, Quarth's three walls, the triarch decision, lock step legions of Old Ghis, Valyrian Road, the Nero quote in that Stannis chapter). He's also a big fan of I, Claudius. I wonder if Locusta is a character in that show. If she is, I'd call that as good as a confirmation for Nightshade.

Were seeing everyone who is known for using poison, using poison. Lysa with the Tears of Lys, Oberyn with the Manticore Venom, Varys with the Widow's Blood. Women, Eunuchs, Dornishmen and Cravens. Now who's the craven that will use some and which will it be?

Sam will be chugging back some greycap when he hears Jon died.

*still a better love story than Twilight*

Here is the Arya passage:

"Sweetsleep is the gentlest of poisons," the waif told her, as she was grinding some with a mortar and pestle. "A few grains will slow a pounding heart and stop a hand from shaking, and make a man feel calm and strong. A pinch will grant a night of deep and dreamless sleep. Three pinches will produce that sleep that does not end. The taste is very sweet, so it is best used in cakes and pies and honeyed wines. Here, you can smell the sweetness." She let her have a whiff, then sent her up the ladders to find a red glass bottle. "This is a crueler poison, but tasteless and odorless, hence easier to hide. The tears of Lys, men call it. Dissolved in wine or water, it eats at a man's bowels and belly, and kills as a sickness of those parts. Smell." Arya sniffed, and smelled nothing. The waif put the tears to one side and opened a fat stone jar. "This paste is spiced with basilisk blood. It will give cooked flesh a savory smell, but if eaten it produces violent madness, in beasts as well as men. A mouse will attack a lion after a taste of basilisk blood."

Wait, maybe Tywin was poisoned by the tears of Lys?

I think Wolfsbane and Demon's dance are the only ones that haven't been used yet. I think it's safe to say that at least one of them will probably be used by Tyene in KL. You can't have a worldclass poisoner there without her at least making an attempt on someone's life.
