Edric Dayne, What's up with this kid, any theories?

Recommended Posts

Edric Dayne, nicknamed "Ned" is the 13 year old head of House Dayne.

We don't know who his father was.

We do know that he was milk brothers with Jon Snow

There is also a decent chance that he was named after Ned, just because Ned and the Daynes have an odd relationship.

He befriends Arya and seems to have a liking for the Starks, including Arya, Ned and Jon

Ashara is probably not his mom, because she died or disappeared 4 years before he was born.

So, what really confuses me is why does Edric like the Starks. If the story about the ToJ that was told to him was the one told to the 7 kingdoms, which is that Ned and Howland Reed killed Arthur Dayne, possibly the greatest knight in the history of one of the oldest and most storied families in Westeros, the reigning Sword in the Morning, whose mantle still remains open, wouldn't Edric hate the Starks, specifically Ned? But there is (at least to me a solid ) chance that not only was he named after Ned, but has zero animosity toward the Starks.

Obviously, what happened at the ToJ was not the story told to the rest of realm, but would you really tell a kid what really happened, whether R+L=J, your aunt killed herself bc of this or she is in hiding because of this, or whatever theory is floating out there.

I know this is not a great or even good post, but this kid just confuses me. I am of the belief that the Daynes, will be back in a big way and integral to the story. Presumably, Arthur or Ashara, if any of them are alive could prove Jon's parentage.

Anyone have any thoughts as to why he is cool with the Starks, who his dad is or how he fits into this whole story if at all?

I have no idea, but I agree that the Daynes are going to eventually play a big role one way or the other. My belief is that the most hints are dropped in GOT, because this was GRRM most elegantly crafted book...and was written when he still thought he was writing a trilogy....and this is where we learn about the Daynes, TOJ, and where Edric first shows up, though he does give a lot more info in SOS.

I believe Ned did house Dayne a solid favor in some capacity and although Edric, may not know the truth, he is just reflecting the overall opinion the older members have of the Starks.

As to what Ned did for house Dayne that give them such a high opinion of him, I don't know. I am thinking he compromised his honor and spread a couple of lies that benefited them, or maybe it is because of whatever he did when "Ashara" turned to "Stark" after she was "dishonoured" according to Selmy. We just don't have enough info yet.

As for how he fits in the story, he was probably going to be the Sword of the Morning after the aborted "five year gap." Now that he's too young we're stuck with Darkstar.

Oh I hope not!! I hope Darkstar gets killed off ASAP and we get back to Edric.

I believe Dawn, the Dayne sword, is actually Lightbringer, and the Dayne line, where worthy, has carried this sword--I believe when Azor Ahai is more solidly identified, it may fall to Edric to carry the sword to the person who will wield it. They are "swordmasters" or something to that effect.

I think when Ned returned the sword to House Dayne, he told them that Ser Arthur Dayne had died to protect Jon (Rhaegar's heir) and Rhaegar had believed Jon would eventually need the sword, but until then, they were to keep it safe, as was their house job... And that Ned's job was to protect the child

Side question to this; where is the kid right now? Did he return to Starfall to ride out the war? Is he roaming the Riverlands with the others who were dissatisfied with Lady Stoneheart? I ask because his next appearance could easily be in the Jaime/Brienne/LS arc, if he feels she's drifted too far and needs to be stopped. Being Beric's squire he might see it as his responsibility.

I don't know what his endgame is, but if I had my way, he'd be new Sword of the Morning, take Dawn and stop the Others, marry Sansa, and pull a Cregan Stark by becoming Hand for like a week and punishing all the shitty people in the books before quietly retiring to Starfall.

The chance of one of those things happening is... small, but possible. The chance of all of it happening is nil, but a girl can dream. I really like Ned for some reason, even if he was only on like 2 pages.

He is worthy of Sansa, gentle and kind.

But prolly won't happen.

Despite the fact Arthur was killed by Ned in fair combat, Ned brought Dawn back to the Daynes. An asshole like Tywin would have kept the sword as a trophy. Considering Arthur waited for the Smiling Knight to get back a sword before continuing kicking his ass, I suppose this is something perceived as very honourable by the Daynes, and is something little Neddy has grown up hearing all his life when legends or stories about Dawn are mentioned. Hence, him wanting to meet Lord Stark.

Also, he probably found curious to find Arya Stark there, from all people in the world. Remember she's a child as much as he is and they both are surrounded by adults. It's natural he wanted to "bond" with another kid there.

Only a knight of House Dayne who is deemed worthy can carry Dawn and be named Sword of the Morning. An hounorable family like the Daynes would never choose a knight who disfigured a young girl that he failed to murder. My money is on young Edric being named tSotM.
