Pretty much all characters so far have had some contribution to the plot I'd say.

Pelago
read the last book?? all the people on the 'voyage' with the Imp?? never will hear about them once Thyrion gets to where he is going?besides i want to continue to follow the story, and at this rate someone will have to read it over my grave
TheHouseHB
Not this year apparently. In an article in time magazine Jane Johnson basically shot down hopes of a 2015 release date. Like we all guessed I think next year is the most likely because George will not want the entire series ruined by a t.v. show.

And if they don't I'm sure people would complain about them being bland and one-dimensional, with unexplained motives if they weren't given a backstory. People love to complain. Also do you want the book to be out fast, or do you want it to be great?

Lord Lannister
I hear Martin finished it last year and postpones the release date a week every time someone starts one of these threads.

Considering Dance took five years and was arguably not great, I'm not so optimistic.I think we can also shoot down a 2016 release, as last I heard GRRM has about 300 pages "absolutely finished" (someone please correct this, if it's false), and it'll probably be around 1000. 2017 seems most likely
239JMFL34109
i think that how the giants and jets season are going is the most important factor in GRRM output.

Poppa Chase
He finished them all in 1996. He's just waiting to get low on money. Well we may never have the next book then, now that I think about it.
Flayed Starkman
I'd say the "arguably' is a very important part of that post Of course it is, that's why I put it there. But every time I've reread it, I've noticed more and more problems with it.
Lord Cactus
Pelago is probably GRRM just judging the waters to see how serious people are about the next book's release date.
Lord Godric
I'm actually surprised people aren't *more* ravenous for this book. It was 6 years between Feast and Dance and we're entering 4 years now between Dance and Winds (and judging from the latest interview there are 'no plans to publish the book this year'). And yet circa 2010 felt like the apocalypse.
