Are people of extremist religious beliefs responsible for moderates?

Probably not.

Religion has held on permanently in the southern US, even though it was the north which was colonized by religious extremists. The heavy handed laws of the Puritans, their hypocritical dealings (becoming rich off the slave trade and later using slavery as an excuse to tax everyone else), and general fanaticism transferred to other causes but it didn't really have an effect outside of their own zone of control.

It's the same thing with "radical Islam." The most extreme state, Saudi Arabia, and the hypocrisy of its ruling family isn't what creates moderates far away. Most other "extreme groups" are really fixated on territorial gain or on riches and things, so whatever that has to do with their beliefs, I don't buy it.
