clair de lune
So the idea for this thread came when I saw the below photo on a friend's Instagram page. This friend is lucky enough to be a performer on a world cruise, and she posted this castle ruins when she was in Scotland and I immediately thought it looked like the perfect Summerhall. From there I started looking at other castles and thinking of locations in Westeros we haven't seen. So far all I've got are Summerhall, Highgarden, and the Whispers (ruined castle of House Crabb on Crackclaw Point), so join in and post your suggestions! Direct links to photos encouraged. clair de lune
How about Caerphilly Castle for Moat Cailin? Would be amazing if they built a realsize replica to film on, but then they can make it all swampy and ruined. Maybe CGI could do that though. Takyon
Great thread! My personal pick for the Tower of Joy would probably be the round tower of the Kilmacduagh Monastery (in Ireland). It'd really fits the mood, IMO:http://www.burrenyoga.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Kilmacduagh-guided-tour.jpghttp://sacredsites.com/images/europe/ireland/tower-kilmacduagh-500.jpghttp://www.celtictrails.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/infohub11.jpg But the Cammo Tower in Scotland would also do pretty nicely:http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/users/14200/thm1024/cammo.jpghttp://ih0.redbubble.net/image.7195131.1209/flat,550x550,075,f.jpghttp://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/02/19/84/2198450_21007119.jpg

Bennis of the Brown Shield
I don't think that using partially ruined castles from the modern day are really the right way to go for castles that aren't supposed to be ruined in AGOT, or any other medieval setting for that matter. Most of the medieval castles that still exist today look pretty different from how they would have looked during the Middle Ages. For a start the outside walls were often whitewashed which gives a rather different look to a castle, and there were usually far more outer walls, towers and support buildings (stables, chapel, barracks, houses etc etc) inside the castle than still exist today. Plus that many of the buildings that do exist are partially ruined of course, or heavily modified during the Early Modern period and afterwards. They should go for something more like this I think:some French castleshttp://chateau.tarascon.fr/assets/images/decouvrir/chateau/patrimoine.jpghttp://medieval.mrugala.net/Architecture/France,_Eure,_Les_Andelys,_Chateau-Gaillard/Chateau%20Gaillard%20-%20reconstitution.jpghttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7a/Les_Tr%C3%A8s_Riches_Heures_du_duc_de_Berry_mars.jpg/640px-Les_Tr%C3%A8s_Riches_Heures_du_duc_de_Berry_mars.jpgvideo: https://vimeo.com/73757383 Tower of Londonhttps://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/2b/be/de/2bbedeef42b658a3bfadd58577e30cdf.jpg Likewise the interiors should look very different from how they tend to do in AGOT or most medieval themed movies. Something more like this: http://th07.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2012/145/b/8/chateau_falaise_throneroom_by_svenart-d512jn0.jpghttp://schooltrips4u.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Dover-Castle-Guest-Hall1.jpghttps://catrionacooper.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/doverbodiam-008.jpg
clair de lune
As some may know, two new castles have been added to the show for their season 6 production in Spain. First up is Castillo de Zafra in the Guadalajaran province. It is 12th century, built on a rock formation, and formidable looking. My first thought was High Heart but that seems unlikely given the Dorne that exists on the show... What do y'all think? Link to photo: http://watchersonthewall.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Zafra.jpgPhoto 2: http://watchersonthewall.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Castillo-de-Zafra.jpg The other is Castell de Santa Florentina, an 11th century castle built on a Roman villa. It's surrounded by greenery; possibly Highgarden (not as grand as I imagined though)? Link to photo: http://watchersonthewall.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/santa-florentina.jpg There's also a virtual tour video you can watch at the article link below.
