Cast the Castles

clair de lune

Recommended Posts

So the idea for this thread came when I saw the below photo on a friend's Instagram page. This friend is lucky enough to be a performer on a world cruise, and she posted this castle ruins when she was in Scotland and I immediately thought it looked like the perfect Summerhall. From there I started looking at other castles and thinking of locations in Westeros we haven't seen. So far all I've got are Summerhall, Highgarden, and the Whispers (ruined castle of House Crabb on Crackclaw Point), so join in and post your suggestions! Direct links to photos encouraged.

I'll Pay The Iron Price - your use of Hermitage castle inspired me to look for something in Spain that would serve as High Hermitage! Here's what I found:

High Hermitage

Tabernas Castle; Tabernas, Spain

Here's a (less flashy, possibly more accurate) second contender for High Hermitage:

"Tower of Joy" in your picture has banner of House Grandison above.

Haha, nice catch! Unfortunately the tower is part of a ruined castle, so the full location couldn't serve as Grandview (seat of House Grandison).

That San Marino castle is stunning.

I really like the Cammo one, but both of those would be great. I can see Ned's 7 vs. the three kingsguard happening at the base of either of them

I don't think that using partially ruined castles from the modern day are really the right way to go for castles that aren't supposed to be ruined in AGOT, or any other medieval setting for that matter.

Most of the medieval castles that still exist today look pretty different from how they would have looked during the Middle Ages. For a start the outside walls were often whitewashed which gives a rather different look to a castle, and there were usually far more outer walls, towers and support buildings (stables, chapel, barracks, houses etc etc) inside the castle than still exist today. Plus that many of the buildings that do exist are partially ruined of course, or heavily modified during the Early Modern period and afterwards.

They should go for something more like this I think:

some French castles

Tower of London

Likewise the interiors should look very different from how they tend to do in AGOT or most medieval themed movies.

Something more like this:

As some may know, two new castles have been added to the show for their season 6 production in Spain.

First up is Castillo de Zafra in the Guadalajaran province.

It is 12th century, built on a rock formation, and formidable looking. My first thought was High Heart but that seems unlikely given the Dorne that exists on the show... What do y'all think?

Photo 2: http://watchersonthewall.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Castillo-de-Zafra.jpg

The other is Castell de Santa Florentina, an 11th century castle built on a Roman villa. It's surrounded by greenery; possibly Highgarden (not as grand as I imagined though)?

There's also a virtual tour video you can watch at the article link below.

The first one would fit Casterly Rock really nicely but from some angles it could also be the ToJ.
