Will the final season by any chance be an extended one?

Instead of 10 episodes could season 7 be like 13 or 15? Or do you think D&D just want to get it over with? Maybe it'll cost too much for HBO as well.

It really just depends how much of the story is left ot tell... it's a cash cow so HBO won't care (same with Sopranos being split into 2 seasons). I don't doubt Dave & Dan will not want to ideally but would if they had to.

Something like 7A - 7 episodes, 7B - 7 epidoes etc.. the extra 4 hours or so could make all the difference + you have additional DVD/blueray sales, and possibiliity of IMAX revenue to makeup for the budget increase that will inevitably come into play once you have massive dragons flying around.

Nope. The final season will be 10 episodes. D&D/HBO have previously said that 10 episodes a year is the absolute maximum possible.

Well that essentially just turns the question into 'will there be 8 seasons?', which despite a lot of people associated with the show saying 7, according to most sources it's not fully known yet (and as Elio has mentioned, this should become more clear as they plan out season 6)

They have said that but that was when another season was waiting in the wings. They might go for another 2 episodes if there's no new season's shoot schedule that's set to begin. But all of that is a big maybe.

However, that assumes the usual schedule. If they did something like seven episodes at the usual time, and then another seven episodes in the fall, maybe it'd be possible for them. Fourteen episodes straight through starting in April, you're right, that's not going to happen.

I think there's a significant chance the final season could be extended and split, and that a few episodes (first and last?) may be simultaneously be released in theatres. But I'd be very surprised if the series will end with a cinema-only movie. There just isn't a big enough market for an R-rated movie that requires having seen 70 hours of TV to make any sense of it.

Edit: Mind you, after seeing how D&D looked in the behind-the-scenes show from last week, I'm starting to worry about their health!

Yes, D&D look almost like prisoners of war now... We can complain about the show all that we want, but no one can say that they don't work HARD. They look completely exhausted and they have at least two more seasons to go...

Well it's cash cow right now. So money is no problem.

I think it depends on how well season 5 does. If sets another record there may be some rethinking. If it sets a BIG record, then parent Time-Warner may step in to save the goose, they love those golden eggs.

With Warner involved , could indeed be a movie.

Despite what everyone else says, I don't think there will be. First, the entire production, everything, runs on the ten episode season. It is what they all know, and what they are used to working with. It is easy to say "Just cut three episodes out," but I don't think it is that easy. There is also the issue of weather. They are used to filming from about July to December. Suddenly this gets thrown off. This will affect how the exterior shots look, and I imagine it is easier to film in certain countries during certain times of the year. Plus D&D and the cast will want to move on. Sure, it is a great show and all, but we can already see some of them getting a bit tired of the hoopla, especially D&D, who will have been on this for more than seven years already. Then there is the story issue. They are used to setting things up and knocking them down in a ten episode block. Now you are asking them to change that to two seven blocks. Some people already complain that ten isn't enough. Then there is the issue of contracts. This is something that I don't know enough about, so maybe someone else can weight in. How long comparatively do other shows take to shoot to Game of Thrones? I imagine they take less time, so it is easier to fit in two shorter versions of a season in a year than for Game of Thrones.

Nor do I think a movie to be very likely. First off you would have to get all the original cast. Full stop, that is going to be expensive, especially when you consider that quite a few of the high end actors in the show are likely to be the ones in the movie. Movies are expensive in general and fantasy movies in particular. Particularly when you consider that one of the reasons some people want a movie is to afford all the big special effects. Then you have to write the script in the show to match up with the movie. That means that the show doesn't even have a proper ending without the movie. That movie wouldn't be released until significantly after the last episode aired. Would the hype remain? Maybe or maybe not. Sure, the show is riding high now, but all shows start to decline after a time. Sevens seasons is a fairly long run for a show. There is also the issue of, frankly, screwing over the customers of HBO by not giving them a proper ending to the show they have been paying for for the last seven years on their television screens. Not everybody likes to go to a theater, and for some people it is just not convenient to go to one. Whereas they can easily watch the show at home on their pimped system not surrounded by people who may make them miss something. I suppose they could release it simultaneously on HBO, but how many people would go to the theater then? Really the only people who could watch the movie and really comprehend what is going on are those who already invested 70 hours into a complicated show. And you know this movie would have to be rated R, which further reduces spontaneous buys. I just don't see it, despite its popularity. Oh, and if you don't get D&D to write it, it is not happening. I think they are ready to move on after the show is done.

The shows that have done the 'extended split season' have all had much more modest production cycles that could do that within the time sufficient to qualify as a single season. From all we've been told about GOT's production cycle, that's simply not possible for them. It would have to be in the form of an eighth season, and I think the people involved in the show are at this point inclined pretty clearly against that.
