Howland Reed connected to a tree a la Bloodraven?

We've all heard various crackpot theories regarding Howland Reed, which is hardly surprising given what he knows about the ToJ and what little we know about his current whereabouts.

What if the answer is simple? He has returned to the CotF and become attached to the roots of a Weirwood. It would explain so many things, such as Jojen's visions and the group's guided tour of the far North to the Wall and beyond.

There is even a tidy little theory going around that the Reeds are descended from the Prince of Dragonflies. It can be easily discounted, but it does beg questions about the Reeds and their comparatively short history. Indeed, the Reed a bastard name like Snow and Rivers?

Anywho, given Reed's interesting plot placement and thus far withheld appearance "on stage" in the timeline other than dreams, interior demonologue and stories, why is seven hells hasn't he shown up to help? I'd say he has been helping, whether as part of the GNC along with Lady Maege Mormont, or busy battling the Ironborn and forsworn Boltons and Freys.

But what if he can't become involved because of the revelation that Greenseers evolve into treeborgs in order to be able to tap into the sentience of the Weirwood network?

It's interesting to hear your thoughts but I can't see it myself. Jojen's visions are explained. He's a greenseer and he dreams about the three eyed Raven which we pretty much know is Bloodraven. The expedition to the North is explained by the fact Jojen is more in touch with his gift, able to interpret these dreams, and because of this he's the ideal messenger to relay Bloodraven's intentions to Bran. If Howland knows he's probably sympathetic because of the children of the forest link, but he's got no reason to go off and be a tree. For me it would be a bit of a ripoff.

Even Bloodraven doesn't seem to be able to have that much direct influence over Westerosi affairs. Bran's obviously quite important to BR and the best he can do for an escort in these perilous times is Jojen and Meera? (plus Coldhands.) He can communicate with greenseers. He can see things in the past, present and future. But any influence he seems to have is subtle. The intelligence you could gather from the weirwood network might well be useful to Howland, but what's the point of Bran's storyline if Howland already has access to it?

Just curious, how can it easily be discounted?

Easily discounted in the sense that Howland Reed is more than likely just a descendent of the Reeds and no more. I don't go for dismissing stuff out of hand, but the majority of members will continue to flame crackpot theories. For myself, I like the idea that Jenny and Duncan had a secret lovechild and kept him/her concealed from Targ HQ for reasons possibly involving Duncan's dis-inheriting and potential complications that would have for the succession.
