Season 4 finale, he shows up with a whole army(don't know how many) where in the ADWD I believe he had about 1,500 men and had to ask the northern clansmen to join his cause. He mentioned to Tychos that he had about 4000 men after Blackwater and based on personal examination of the double envelopment maneuver he pulled on Mance I'm pretty sure there isn't even 2000 men in both contingents combined let alone 4000 or a "whole army."
