Question about important events on Season 1 (Season 4 spoilers)

I became a huge fan of the show, but as I am very into details, I am troubled by some very important facts of the end of season 1 that are not making much sense to me. It is about Robert's death and the dispute for succession.

I consider this moment the most important of the story, because everything that follows next is a consequence of it.

However, the deaths of J.Arryn and king Robert raise some very intriguing questions:

1 - It is revealed in season 4 that J.Arryn was not killed by the Lannisters, but by his wife and Baelish. I assume that Baelish had no interest of having Stannis as heir, but it bugs me that he could act right on time (when Arryn already knew the truth about the kids and was just about to tell Robert). So, I have to assume Cersei was quite lucky on that, for if it was not for Baelish, she would probably not have been able to conceal her secret. Am I missing something here?

2 - About Robet's death. This problem is the most intriguing to me of the whole plot. People generally assume the Lannisters are quite smart and crafty, dangerous and calculating people. They assume Ned Stark was naive and did everything wrong while hand of the king. However, I see that in Robert's death Cersei was again very lucky, much more lucky than smart. Ned Stark was able to find the truth and may have made a mistake when he told it to Cersei and asked her to flee. However, what did she do? Robert was killed by a boar on an unsuccessful hunting (ok, she may have poisoned his wine, but still it was not safe to assume Robert would get a fatal wound). To make things worse, Robert had time to talk to Ned and could have change the course of all the story if Ned have told him the truth, but at the time Ned thought it wasn't necessary. In the end, Ned was betrayed by the rest of the court (including the king's brother Renly), that refused to accept the king's last wishes.

So my whole point is: The Lannisters were just very very lucky to keep their secret, right? It doesn't make sense at all to assume Cersei was prepared for the whole thing and secure the throne for her son. I think everything would make more sense if the deaths of J.Arryn and Robert have been different. Am I wrong? Thanks!
