Is Desire Really a Razor Covered in Honey?

Is it really possible to live without desire? Feeling whole within oneself, not feeling any lack, staying in the moment, not looking forward to the fulfillment of any hunger or longing? No rewards, no carrot dangling in front of you? Nowhere to go, you're already there?

You are not your emotions. This is a defense mechanism of the ego. Let your emotions pass by. Wave to them as they go...

...don't ignore them. Just recognize them for the intangible, temporary things they are. When you hold onto an emotion, you're likely re-living the same event or thought over and over. If you're more like, "Hmm, look at that anger. Here it is. That sure is anger. Ok, see you next time, anger" it becomes less of a problem. For anger to stay around, you have to keep focusing on the thing that initially caused the anger and keep triggering. It's a conversation where the ego keeps telling you "See, we were right to be angry, weren't we precious?"

ETA: As to questions 2, emotions don't define us, and neither do thoughts. The fact that you are able to observe emotions and thoughts in yourself means the observer is something other than thoughts and emotions. 3: What's so great about being human, or rather, what's so good about your definition of being human?

Lummel, I think Lazarová is channeling Tywin. "Never let sentiment get in the way of ambition". Being focused instead of resting in oneself might have a little whiff of eighties to it, but it's still quite popular.

I'd say it's preferable to savour all of your emotions and desires, but conciously take little pinches and see where they take you. It's good to have a goal or purpose - to determine your trajectory - , but it's also good to stop once in a while and enjoy the scenery, check the map and the compass, listen to what your heart tells you and align your goals with your newly assessed state.

In other words, when you check your desires once in a while, you may be able to lick the honey off the razor without cutting yourself too badly.

That's the goal of Buddhism, I think: Nothing is done for the sake of its reward, or avoidance of punishment.

hahahaha this thread makes me think of the quote from Before Sunset when Jesse is talking about desire being bad or whatever and Celine sayd ''isn't that a symptom of depression? not desiring anything?''

something like that anyway
