Jasonkala
Hey everybody, first time poster here. I just had a thought about House Targaryen. Their sigil is a three headed red dragon on a black field. So I ask, why is it not reversed? When Aegon made the banner, I think it would've made more sense to have a black dragon on it to signify Balerion. Neither Vhagar or Meraxes were red either. Morgul-Blade
I'm going to say it's because dragons are fire made flesh. The red dragon signifies it's fire. Plus, black background with a red dragon definitely looks more badass than the reverse.
The Wolves
The red represents Fire and Blood.
Blazfemur
The red represents Fire and Blood. blood was more what i was thinking, the blood portion of their house words. blood is very important to targaryens, it's the basis for their incest (keeping it pure)
Eiko Dragonhorn
Black = FireRed = Blood It's blood that lets them control Dragons. It's fire that lets them control Westeros. So it's a red dragon on a black field.
Ser Belwas The Strong
Because the black dragon on a red field is reserved for house Blackfyre.

JonCon's Red Beard
Someone showed Aegon the picture of the dress and he got confused after that. The red on black definitely pops more. :dunno: Indeed. One of the few Houses that actually hired a designer. Which I approve.
the storm king returns
Because house Targaryan is an ancient house and it is possible the first Dragon they ever received was red? Or it represents fire and blood like others have said.
J. Stargaryen
I think the answers above about red = fire and blood are correct, but I would also point out that Stark/Targaryen dichotomy, which is present in the background colors of their sigils. White and black, which are opposites like ice and fire.
Howling Mad
Red on black is closer to red on blue color scheme of GRRM's favorite football team.
Fire Eater
The red dragon was the sigil of King Arthur and House Pendragon, and one the characters has an Arthurian parallel.
