Reginald blackfield
Ok this is my first theory, please give constructive criticism but please no bashing.I would like to start by saying that I do not believe the long night and the Others are a Chicken and the egg scenario, the Others did not cause the Long night and the Long Night did not cause the Others. With that said here is my personal theory of how the Long Night came into being
Prince of the North
Hey! Don't leave me hangin' like that! But I'm with you so far...I, too, don't think one caused the other. I think both the Others and Long Night occur together because of something else ;)
Reginald blackfield
Okay I accidentally posted this thread early Anyway onto the theory, the Yi Tish tale of the blood betrayal is an origin theory for the long night. Although there are many origin myths around Planetos for this even I rhink this is the one with the most (albeit metaphorical) truth to it. It States that the Long Night came into existence after the bloodstone emperor worshipped a black stone which fell from the sky, clearly a meteorite. Now the overall description of the Long Night sounds like the the suppossed aftermath of another impact event, the K-T extinction which wiped out the Dinosaurs. In this debris was shot into the atmosphere, for many generations causing permanant night. Sound Familiar? It should! I believe the Long Night too was caused by an impact event. Now all other aspects of the story (the Lion of the Night for example) were invented solely to fill in the gaps of knowledge. In a medieval world people would realistically have little to no knowledge of science, where they did not understand things they invented myths to try and explain it. The tale of the blood betrayal being one of these. Now this theory was already supposed to be much more detailed but for the reason I mentioned earlier it had to be shortened down. I may be wrong about all of this and please do give constructive criticism for me to improve!
walkingWITHcersei
You could very well be correct though I expect the true story probably contains a hint of magic along with a natural event. GRRM uses a light touch with magic, thankfully, but seeing as the seasons aren't a natural occurrence (from GRRM himself) I think the LN has to have a magical element to it as well. Just my intuition but if he goes with an entirely natural explanation your theory is as likely as any out there.
