Why do so many people think Bloodraven is bad?

::Disclaimer:: I have not yet read the Dunk & Egg stories and I understand BR was a character in those so I'm probably missing a lot.

On these forums I see a lot of speculations that BR did something nefarious, like arranging for character deaths and so on. (and even Jojenpaste)

When I read DANCE, I took him as an odd, but benevolent character who wants to help Bran, but many seem to view him as a sinister character.

Am I missing something either from the ASOIAF series or is it because I haven't gotten to D&E yet?

Yeah, you should read the Dunk and Egg stuff to get a better idea of who he was in those days. He had a pretty shady reputation, and his motives are not clear, so there is a lot of suspicion around the forums.

Thanks!

I figured I was missing a lot there. I have the D&E collection pre-ordered, so I guess I'll find out in October. :D

World of ice and fire spoiler ahead.

The reason he was sent to the wall was that he offered a Blackfyre pretender safe passage into Kings Landing to make his claim before the great council after the current king died, then ordered that he be seized and executed when he entered the city. And even more unforgivable... he was kind of rude to Ser Duncan the Tall in the Mystery Knight.

It's not like he was a benevolent soul who was wrongly judged for being a shady albino.

The guy was, at best, a pragmatic ruler, a "ends justify the means" kind of guy. I don't know, I think he's got shades of Tywin, even down to how his motives could've been ultimately personal and not entirely political (after all, he was competing with Bittersteel for the love of Shiera)

Raven is a bit suspect, like the old guy at Carl's Jr. who summons kids over to his table to say, "What's this behind your ear?" as he produces a quarter. On the other hand, this helped me to gain an appreciation for the 25 cent piece and I went on to collect 49 of the 50 state quarters. So Raven could be fostering a magical kid exactly the right way and it just looks odd to us..... because magic is odd, even when it's done by the book.

So if he did shady stuff in the past, could he possibly be having a redemption arc by helping Bran. (Just throwing it out there becuase I haven't seen that angle yet either. I've realized I need D&E before I form a solid hypothesis)

Could be, but he doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who thinks he did something wrong. I think he believes everything he did was necessary for the sake of the realm

Bloodraven has had some rather ominous sounding lines that people have misconstrued, I think. His thing about embracing darkness for example. What people take it to mean: embrace evil. What it really means: when the Others bring another Long Night, you need to be comfortable in the darkness so that you can defeat them, and also so you blend in so you can get around them when necessary.

I have been wondering as well!

I haven't read D&E so I was wondering if that's where it came from.

As for shadiness: sorcery in and of itself doesn't bother me, if he was doing things to do his job (regardless of whether i approve of said job), I'm ok with it. Just like I don't care that Mel uses illusions, I just find her conversion technique severely lacking. The trap for the Blackfyre pretender; well, as I understand it, he was the varys of his time and was on the side of the Targs so I really don't care that he trojan horse'd the guy. Any idiot that trusts a Varys type is going to meet an undesirable end, that's the way it is.

In Dance, I am not sure what he wants but I'm pretty sure he wants to help Bran to defeat the others and teach him magic. I have a positive bias for the CotF, so if they associate with him... I am trusting him for now.

He wasn't rude at all, he seemed pretty pleasant considering Dunk and Egg could have done some pretty serious damage, I don't really get how people come to this conclusion. He answers all their questions and even helps them keep their cover and such. He also saved Dunk's ass

Not to mention you realize he basically saved the entire dynasty with his actions.
