Green Hereseer
Am I the only person who feels like Reznak mo Reznak shows up out of nowhere?I think in his first appearance in the series (ch.2 of DwD) he's already Dany's seneschal. There's no real explanation of how he got the job. By comparison, the Shaved-Pate seems to get a pretty decent background. Also... Dany doesn't really ever seem to like Rez-mo or trust him, even prior to Quaithe's speech about "the perfumed seneschal."What gives? Did I miss something? bemused
I don't think you missed any detailed information, but I think it's hinted pretty strongly that Reznak was always an operative of the great families (and the Green Grace ...?). We're told that though he also made a show of shaving his head, he was practically bald anyway.... In other words, the act can't be trusted to reflect a break with the culture of the former rulers. Then there's the constant mention of his overpowering use of "sweet" perfume... probably to cover a bad or "fishy" smell ( not necessarily in the literal sense). We don't really have much more information about Skahaz. That there's bad blood between Skahaz and Loraq is mentioned more than once ... but we really don't know why. I'll be interested to know what caused it. Skahaz doesn't seem to consider his own house among the slavers, judging by the way he speaks. His own family's pyramid is "modest". What line of business had his family been involved in ? When Hizdahr assigns him a new "honourable" post, it just happens to be one that would take him outside the walls regularly (inspecting dredges, etc.), making him vulnerable to accident, or stray arrows. I don't think he refuses it simply because it isn't grand enough. Of course I could be wrong, but I'm not quite so curious about Reznak's back story, since by word and deed, he's always carrying water for the GG and Loraq. I think if GRRM had told us more, it would have made the opposition against Dany too obvious, too soon. ETA: When you think about it, he's always on the verge of overplaying his hand (he's a nervous agent) There's at least one occasion when the GG has to stop him from saying too much (when trying to convince Dany to submit to a physical examination by the Graces and Hizdhar's female relations). He's squeamish - sweating profusely during the scene with Groleo's head ... and though Barristan fears that Skahaz would torture Reznak if he took him into custody, something tells me that Reznak would "spill his guts" without much help. It won't surprise me if he turns out to have been recommended to Dany by the GG.
