Impressions and Commentary on the Season 5 Premiere

Westeros

Recommended Posts

Is there a sense that the "Maggie the frog" scene is something that we could return to during the season, in future Cersei flashbacks? As in us only seeing a glimpse of it? Or do we see them leave, and the door is shut on it?

Otherwise having Linda part of a show discussion is rather predictable. "Will the sun rise in the morning" is a question with a just as predictable answer as "will Linda like an episode of the show". I wish there was some more ... acknowledgement ... or self awareness of this aspect. But perhaps you don't want to do any videos by yourself?

This was my first time seeing one of their videos and it was terrible. Elio is alright, but Linda was just...

We see them leaving, as I recall, but can't swear to it 100%.

We doubt her friend was going to ask anything, however, as she was terrified of Maggy (she was more like Jeyne Farman than Melara Hetherspoon).

From the books I have always had the impression that Illyrio and Varys where playing a short game and a long game.

The short game is the Aegon deal with somehow Viserys and Daenerys folded in, have always felt we have had information about this withheld.

The long game is the invasion of the Others into Westeros , I must admist this is only by osmosis, mainly the dragons.

Maybe I got this wrong but isn't The Others invasion aimed at as the Big Problem?

There is a show down ... a Ragnarök with the Others that decides the fate of Westeros and maybe Essos as well?

Somehow Illyrio and Varys have figured this out long long long ago?

This 'Ice Mordor' war sort of trumps all the gaming for the Iron Throne ... maybe I have gotten the wrong impression from the story in the five novels?

You all know that the Aegon story plays a role in the big picture?

Because if he does not then roll on to big battle which I figure Westreos and Essos is going to win.

Did I hear right? Bran is completely absent this season? I wonder how the TV public will take this. On the one hand there was grumbling that Bran's arc was boring, on the other hand at the end of last season Bran finally arrives at his destination, giving a promise that something interesting will happen with Bran now.

I'm glad because that gives GRRM another year to get tWoW out so we book readers can find out what's going on with Bran before the TV show reveals anything.

Perhaps with Varys saying "my country" to Tyrion that's the show hinting that in fact Varys is a Blackfyre, which will come into the show later. Or would that be too subtle for this show?

We've known this since the Summer.

Just watched it. Random thoughts:

If Maggy isn't a retcon, she's the next best thing, and arguing that Cersei only remember her because of the recent traumatic events makes it even more retcon-y. "Oh, by the way, I just remembered this incrediby important information right now. What were the chances?" And still, the whole thing is as useless as the nipples on the Sand Snakes' breast plates and I wonder why Benioff and Weiss chose that drivel to pop their flashback cherry.

This is a whitewashing I can get behind, because Cersei being a mustache twirling villain from day one and throwing kids into wells like that fucking Orphan movie was ridiculously over the top

Also, glad Mance really got burned and I hope it sticks. No cheesy glamours for me, please

Damn shame about Varys' motivation. It makes him way less interesting or intriguing if he's just some kind of altruistic doomsday prepper who was just waiting for the day Robert would fuck up the realm beyond repair

Also, the thing about Dany's reason for going to Westeros is hardly a deviation, I think. As Tyrion says, the girl is a savior. That's why she conquered and stayed at Slaver's Bay. D&D are probably highlighting that to make her "fire and blood" transformation even more drastic, assuming they're doing it in the first place

Anyway, I'm not really hyped for this season, we'll see

the only change that interests me thats been mentioned is the complete removal of the valonqar portion of the prophecy and cersei's death.

considering they've kept all the other parts of it, the most obvious reason that they cut it to me is because they think its too spoilery. they probably think that letting the audience know how exactly cersei dies two years before it actually happens (i do think cersei will make it to ados/season 7) will remove the intensity of it. and considering that jaime is going to dorne early in the season and tv tyrion probably won't be having the revenge fantasies of killing and raping cersei, the valonqar portion just wont have the same effect in the show like it did in the books.

I agree. The prophecies in the books allow for far more ambiguity than on television. And I like the idea of Cersei's slow decline into madness far more than her being the proverbial bad seed from the start. As for the other changes, I don't care if they cut Aegon or that Jaime gets sent to Dorne. I kind of wish we could have seen Randall Tarly (Ian McShane would have been perfect) or Genna (The quote about Tyrion being Tywin's real son would have left me in chills) but they are minor characters. Hell, adapting gargantuan books into 10 hours is tough. They spent over 200 days filming in 3 countries with a budget, juggling talent. If I want the real stories I'll reread the books, if I want to watch Brienne beat up on the Hound, I'll watch the show.

That being said, I really hope they didn't cut fake Arya. Even if it's played by Ramsey's girlfriend, I don't care. The story in Entertainment Mag mentions in passing that Ramsey gets a new play toy, I hope that's what they're eluding to.

The implications of Varys being a Dany loyalist all this time means he and Illyrio were looking to replace the de facto stable leadership of Robert (Really Jon Arryn) with....Viserys

Simply not believable from Vary's perspective that unilke everyone else he is there "for the realm"

If you are pro Targ you don't set them up with Dothraki, in fact you do that if you want to make it look like you are helping but aren't, and you quietly hoping to to scupper the Willem darry/Prince Doran alliance revolving around Arianne and Viserys. At the very least contain its capability, eg Viserys marries into one House which is a crushable nuisance ala the Greyjoys, ut if Dany can marry into a second House, say the Tyrells who held the balance of power in the Wot5K then Dorne + Reach is a different proposition

Varys and Illyrio being pro Blackfyres headed by a King they have groomed "for the good of the realm" is the only thing that actually makes any sense at all

Not to mention the major irony of the entire saga is that a Robert led united Westeros as was the case in AGoT where there's no Dragons is arguably the most capable form of leadership against the Others/White Walkers/Wights.

As Linda suggests in the begining of the video, at this point my main concern is that the show doesn't spoil the books. In this regard, my approach has changes completely since the earlier seasons and now I'm happy any time that one subplot is eliminated, one character is axed or a motivation is changed.

The problem is that the eliminations of characters and plot thread might be spoilers in themselves.
