In the end of aDwD, Jon received a letter from Ramsey Snow/Bolton stating that he killed Stannis, and he holds prisoner Mance Rayder.

Then, we see in WoW that Stannis is... not dead and not captured.

Do you think that theon chapter on TwoW is chronologically previous to Jon's chapter on DwD? Or Ramsey was just lying?

If so, how would he know so much (maybe by the ravens of Karstark's men)? Why lie about Stannis dead, end not saying his also a prisoner, giving him a (much) bigger barging coin?

I am pretty sure GRRM stated on his Not A Blog when he released the chapter that the chapter should have come some point before the last Jon chapter chronologically. Don't remember the exact quote but I know it implied as much)

But you do bring up a few valid arguments. If Ramsay wrote the letter and was lying, why wouldn't he say he held Stannis captive instead of saying he was dead. All Jon, or anyone for that matter, would need is to recieve a letter from Stannis to know that Ramsay was lying. So this makes me think that Ramsay truly believes Stannis to be dead.

If Ramsay was told by the Manderly forces that Stannis was killed after 7 days of battle and then hands Ramsay Stannis' sword, it's easy to see why he said Stannis was dead in the pink letter. I have read theories that Stannis and Manderly didn't actually fight but rather made arrangements to make Ramsay/Roose think Stannis is dead and the battle was won so they will lower their guard and allow Stannis to take them by surprise. Stannis also could have used Karstsrk's ravens to misinform Ramsay but if Ramsay has Stannis' sword, then he should also have the Karstarks, who would be able to tell Ramsay they were taken captive because of a letter Stannis received from the Nights Watch.
