Watch the Red Carpet

Westeros

Recommended Posts

The US premiere of season 5 is just about to start in San Francisco… but before that, there’s a star-studded red carpet to keep an eye on, with many of the show’s cast and crew members on hand for the celebrations. HBO has kindly provided a live stream of the event for those who’d like to watch vicariously! Also, they promise a special, new behind-the-scenes video at the end of the stream, so that’s something worth watching:

I attended this event despite never managing to get a ticket. I just grabbed a decent perch and did some people watching.

I had a few observations as I was near the entrance for non-VIP types.

The fans who had gathered outside skewed toward young women. I would have estimated that the ratio 'outside the barriers' was 60-40 female.

The fans who got in skewed male. Groups of them would come in bearing gear from local tech firms (I could identify a Google group, a Facebook group, a Pinterest group). Since those companies are notorious for struggling to find female employees, it would not come as a surprise that if they got the tickets, the tickets would go to men.

There were definitely some people there who just wanted to be at a red carpet event. Straight out of Hollywood types.

The cast spent most of their time in a tent with the press (ie, that WAS the purpose of the event). We were about 40 yards from the tent, which was clear plastic so we could sort of see what was going on. But as it was crowded, it was generally hard to see anyone other than Kristian Nairn.

Alfie Allen takes a lot of smoke breaks.

Only one actor came over to the barricades and signed autographs. I had hoped after the others saw that Kit had no problems and that the crowd was polite, others might follow but they did not. It seemed they were all most excited to see each other (This is not a criticism - they probably don't get much time together as a big group).

Once they got upstairs, the actors did some vamping on a balcony. Alfie was the first out there, but he quickly realized this was NOT the place for a quiet smoke.

Nathalie Emmanuel was quite striking, even from a distance.

Maisie and Sophie seemed a bit overwhelmed by it all.

Peter did not approach the barricades, but did step out into a broad area and spent twenty seconds or so acknowledging the crowd. A thousand people were chanting "Peter."

It IS weird to see Alfie and Iwan Rheon goofing off together, but they clearly are pals.

Ian Beattie (Ser Meryn) seems to be quite a kidder. He loved vamping for the crowd.

Emilia only had time for a quick wave. But even 50 meters away, that smile shines.

Thanks for the report. Did you get any merchandise?
