The Americans v.2

The old thread was closed, so I thought I'd start a new one.

I just discovered the show over the weekend and I'm absolutely loving it. I've watched the first 10 episodes of season 1.

The chemistry between Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Phillip (Matthew Rhys) is great. I wasn't surprised to find out that they were dating.

They mission of the week is nice to keep the episodic excitement but it's also very interesting to see the overarching story unraveling with each episode.

Don't get too attached to the "mission of the week" thing, because that falls to the wayside after (or maybe even during, I can't remember) Season 1.

Does it?

Oh well, I do like the overarching story too. I did read the reviews for the other two seasons and they have been very positive. I'm hoping i won't be disappointing.

Weird started one two minutes after you :D

I'll transfer my post here, spoilers for last weeks ep. I really liked that one probably cause we saw the return of Arkady "So, next time I'm home, I won't be able to ride the train" he's the best.

Phillip has to kill Martha now and I think he knows it

I have 2 episodes left of Season 1. This show is really average.

Really, I think it's better than average at least the 10 episodes I've watched.

The story has a nice flow to it, the protagonist have excellent chemistry, they dialogue is smart and it has edge to it.

I'd rank it highly for what I've seen so far.

Yeah I actually edited my post. Oh, and I love Nina. Don't really care for Elizabeth. At all.

Edit: It is growing on me with each episode I watch though. Hopefully Season 2 will continue that trend.

I dont think the show is average at all. I think its the best show on television.

Thank goodness for actual television critics and reviewers who aren't us on some random literary message board then, huh. See number 4.

Yup. Anyone who knows anything about television knows that it's one of the most critically acclaimed shows on television right now. It's not an uncommon stance at all among critics that it is one of (if not the) best shows right now.

Matthew Rhys should probably win an Emmy for his work here, and the rest of the cast is not far behind. Extremely well acted show. Even the kid characters are well done, which, I thought was the sole providence of Game of Thrones! :P

I'm not sure if it's my favorite current show, but it's definitely in the conversation.

A lot of people on this board will tell you GoT isn't in the top 10 either. Also, we talk every week in the Black Sails thread and that show gets no recognition and is no where on that list. Let's not get crazy listening to these critics now.

Definitely Emmy worthy, and its one of the few shows that manages to make me feel genuinely uncomfortable and thoughtful.

Other shows currently in production that are in the same class:

  • Peaky Blinders on Netflix. Cillian Murphy is amazing. The show is amazing.

The Flash. Satisfies my nerdiness, even if it's clearly inferior to my other favs, its still very entertaining. Eclipsed Arrow as my favorite comic-based TV show.

Vikings. Ragnar. Lagertha. Rollo. Ragnar. Ecbert. Aethelstan. Torstein. Bjorn. Ragnar. So many awesome characters and moments of awesome.

Justified. The Dialogue is just amazing, and Harlon County has become as much a character as Raylan, Boyd, Ava, etc. Glad its going out on such a high note.

Game of Thrones. Not as good as the books, but riveting and suitably epic.

Banshee. Every episode is like a quality action movie, and many of the characters are quite interesting. Sugar/Job interaction is gold.

True Detective. McConaughey and Harrelson were fabulous, and I can only hope that the next season is even close to that quality.

That's all I can think of, but I know I missed some.

Have to agree, Americans is probably my favourite show currently airing, if you haven't taken to it by a few episodes into season 1 then it's probably not for you. Though I wouldn't agree with a few entries on that top 10 list.

Americans, Fortitude, Better Call Saul and Vikings are the only ones I look forward to each week, and probably in that order too.

Haven't watched Fortitude or Better Call Saul. Never heard of the former, and I missed the first few episodes of the latter, so I decided to wait to binge watch when the first season is over.

Anyways, Americans is all kinds of Bad Ass, and the only thing I'd like is for Matthew Rhys to get into more H2H. His fight in the pilot is still one of my fav fights ever.

I can't explain the lack of love for Black Sails. GoT, well discussing it on a forum full of hard core book fans? It's apples and oranges. So people who know television and don't look at the source material and just figure the show itself aren't wrong. GoT as television is damn good television.

But that's a digression.
