Squab
If the tv series completes the story b4 the books, do we then begin to defer to the show as canon rather than the books? How was star wars and star trek canon decided?
mormont
Show canon is show canon. Book canon is book canon. They're different, and they have been since episode 1. Preferring one is fine, deferring to either is daft.
sj4iy
I don't really see why this is important, tbh...they are both fictional, neither can be "more right" than the other.
MountainThatSkates
Ultimately its probably going to depend on a person's preferences. If a person likes the books better they will claim the books canon and vice versa. For me, the books are just so much more I can't imagine ever thinking the show "canon". Arakan
Canon discussions are weird anyway. And in this case not relevant at all. The more interesting question is: which format will define the mainstream legacy of the story? As it seems, the TV show has a realistic chance to be exactly that...much like with James Bond or The Godfather. Whereas LOTR or Dune will always be remembered as classic pieces of literature, first and foremost. Time will certainly tell.
scotcat
The show is the show and the books are the books. Every viewer/reader will have their own preference as to which takes precedence. As not everyone who watches the show reads the books, for a large segment of the viewers show canon will be the only canon. Personally, I don't see why one has to be superior to the other - the show is separate from the books - I can see why people would have a personal preference but not why one entity should defer to the other.
