Where are the Lhazareen?

Recommended Posts

Lhazareen are too unimportant for Yandel's tastes.

Qarth is too proud and Ghiscari are horrible. These are the in-universe reasons for their absence. RL reason is to save space for new materials about the lands like Yi Ti that we knew nothing about.

No idea about Great Moraq and Ulthos (the latter is too far so it kinda makes sense)

I was so looking forward to Ulthos, but Qarth and Ghiscari wars were at least mentioned. Lhazareen just do not exist. And since they may have been linked to Valyrians, I thought that was the reason they were omitted. To prevent us from making too many connections. Maybe I'm overthinking this.

Yeah there was nothing about Lhazar, not even a single mention. The only Lhazareen thing in the world book is the mention of godwives in Asshai, priestesses of the Great Shepherd.

I like Lhazareen so I wish there was some new materiel but oh well ^^

I think it's just because they're not considered important. They're a group of peaceful shepherds that, as far as we know, haven't really made any contribution to history.

What do you mean that qarth is too proud. Qarth and the ghiscari are mentioned in the book.

Yes but they didn't have their own sections, we only learned Qarth's background which turned out to be not as amazing as they claim so, fitting Dany's Qarth arc in aCoK, a city that is too beautiful to be true.(Not that the city is not real lol, it just her people)

I think the main reason is that Yandel doesn't like how they glorify themselves so he gives Jade Compendium for those who wants to know more about Qarth.

Ghiscari has even less mention than Qaathi. There is only a handful descriptions of the cities and some details about numerous Ghiscari vs Valyrian wars.

How many Lazhareen are there, really? It's a while since I read the relevant passages, but couldn't it theoretically be that the Lhazareen are extremely few in number, and/or just one of many insignificant peoples living in the area?

The Lhazareen are Planetosi equivalent of Wales and New Zeeland, and evey other place where sheep herding is hot stuff.

To be honest, they remind me more of ancient Israel/early Christianity meshed together. The idea of god being a kind of "Great Shepherd" is a common allegory in Christianity, and the ancient Israelies were known for being sheep herders--but then again so were many other cultures.

That's also why I figured we never got a lot of information on them, as that would be treading into too familiar a territory. A quick little nod was all that was needed.

Adakhakileki
Poison Sea

Great Moraq, its cities (like Faros, which was mentioned in aCoK) and other islands. (Well Great Moraq is mentioned twice but no info save for its the biggest island in the world)

Minor but I wonder about Painted Mountains and what makes them "painted". They look pretty on the map book.

Ruined city of Bhoash. As it wasn't mentioned as a Valyrian city, I assume it was a Ghiscari city.

Asabhad. %100 sure it is a Hyrkoon city but it wasnt in the world book, even tho its not ruined and a port city.

Manticore Islands.

Lhazar. Well obviously :P

Ulthos(only once I guess) and Ulos and that ruined city.

edit:

Isle of Cedars

No, I agree with you here. It’s highly suspicious by omission. We also got almost nothing on ancient Vayria itself - a lot more about their victims, and the Targaryens. I definitely think George is keeping some of this a mystery on purpose.

Tolos? Mantarys is only mentioned in a list of ex-Valyrian cities.

Tolos is said to have the best slingers in the world as they use lead instead of stone. It's the same info in aDwD.

No extra info about Elyria.

No mention of Isle of Cedars too.
