About Sansa and Arya

Recommended Posts

There's been a lot of speculation regarding the two fates of these characters and if they meet again.

Today, I was lurking on the latest Sansa thread and a terrible idea hit me involving the fate of the Stark sisters.

GRRM has said before that the Stark children will mirror and parallel their respective direwolves.

Some of the previous theories focusing specifically on Sansa and Lady's death suggest that:

  • Sansa lost her magical capabilites
  • Lady's death represents Sansa's first real disillusionment with Southern society and first moment of forced maturity
  • Sansa will be sacrificed as the modern Nissa Nissa
  • Sansa will simply die playing the game

HOWEVER, I believe that Sansa's fate could be more tragic than any of those listed above. Sansa could die, and it may be because of Arya.

As we know Arya is currently training with the Faceless Men to become an assassin. Many speculate that Arya will return to Westeros for a very high profile kill.

What if Arya's Westeros mission is to kill someone (maybe Littlefinger?) who also happens to be close to Sansa. (Given the wide possibilities of their respective character arcs, Sansa could even be in King's Landing or Winterfell by this point)

And what if Arya succeeds and somehow the blame actually gets placed on Sansa?

In a cruel twist of fate, Sansa would be put to death for a killing she didn't do, while Arya gets away unscathed, perhaps even unaware of said repercussions.

This would mirror innocent Lady being sacrificed in absence of the real culprit Nymeria.

What do you guys think?

It certainly would be a very nice mirror to the 'Lady episode'.
I suppose if someone like Littlefinger were killed, the blame would almost certainly go towards Sansa, due to her proximatey to him, her having a motive (LF betraying Ned) and the fact that she is widely suspected in aiding the killing of Joffery.
Hope it's not the case though, I've a feeling it would destroy Arya if she found out.

Lady was not "sacrificed" but killed out of spite for, being a direwolf. Nymeria's "guilt" had nothing to do with it.

And no, that's not either character's reason of existence.

But it would seem to be the natural evolution of the "let's pit Arya and Sansa against each other" fan mentality.

Hmm, I don't think we *know* any character's exact reason of existence? :dunno:

But thanks for your insight!

Actually I don't think Martin has said this. What he has said is that the girls need to work many things out when next they meet again. What that might mean is hard to say.

I've been of the same thinking for a long time. I think Sansa dies as a act of mercy by the hands of someone with her fathers look, either Jon or Arya fit, I lean more towards Arya.

Hopefully though Sansa & all the Starks survive & prosper.

I thought it was that they had issues to work out, not that they necessarily would. Lord knows that GRRM doesn't appear to be big on characters with issues in their relationship getting closure.

I do agree that if one of them dies--and I doubt GRRM would kill off both--it will be Sansa, although I've gone back and forth on this.

What if the executor uses Oathkeeper or Widow's Wail ! :crying:

Never said they would work them out. I recently saw an essay on ASOIAF University that makes me question whether the girls will ever reconcile their differences. And while I'm not convinced Sansa will live to be an old woman, I'm fairly sure Arya won't.

I would feel so bad for arya if she ended up killing sansa, I dont think she could live with the guilt of killing one of her pack. Especially since she keeps trying to find a pack and keeps losing them. However I can see nymeria and her pack killing LF and sansa getting the blame, even thou she is innocent. I would prefer it to be that way. Arya has already suffered so much.

This is one reason I do not want that to happen. The other is that I love Sansa, and I do not think she will die. As I have impounded into the minds of many ingrates here, Lady's fate is not directly mirrored by Sansa. It meant she was different than the rest of her family, and that she will enter a game of politics rather than to warging and other supernatural activity. If she was meant to die like Lady had, it would have happened in the first book. It simply won't happen, not by Arya or anyone.

I dont like sansa and really her death wouldn't bother me either way. I just dont want arya or jon to be involved with it. It would hurt both of them in ways that I dont even want to consider.

I dont see lady's death as a sign to Sansa's death, but of her estrangement from the pack. I think the other stark children will return home, all but sansa. She won't die. She just never makes it back to winterfell.

Samsa's arc has already "mirrored" lady. Cerci blamed her for Joff's death even though she probably didnt think Sansa did it she just wanted someone to be punished. Same with lady. Only difference was Lady's death was literal and Sansa's was metaphorical. Kill the girl so the woman can be born.
