The need for answers drives the story. The story is 1,000 plot hooks with no resolution ... so far. Unless you think we all just read it for the porn.

So yes, it really does suck if the story never finishes, or does not finish within a reasonable time from the perspective of all the fans who are buying his books and made him a success.

It also sort of sucks that the show will (almost certainly) finish before the books, but perhaps not quite so much.

That said, I signed on because I wanted to see GRRM's ending, not whatever ending is eventually approved by the HBO executives.

On the other hand, I am so long overdue for some resolution, that I make no attempt to avoid spoilers, either.

Personally I'm avoiding the fifth season and subsequent seasons of the show entirely. Even though it will be very hard to avoid all spoilers here in the forum as well as in the social environment I will still try my best. They show is headed in a different route to the ultimate ending which is more or less the same in the books. Yet, I still want the resolution in the original work, the books, before watching the ADAPTATION of that material which is what Game of Thrones is.

Just my two cents.

I am most curious in regards to Sansa as her book material is exhausted with subtile hints and she seems to be going in a completely un-expected direction from what she appears to be headed in the books.

Yes! We hear a lot from GRRM and Elio/Linda about how her story is going to go in a surprising/unsuspected direction. But its been so many years...I'm worried I've overhyped it in my head by now lol. I am excited to see the next season. It seems clear that Sansa is up to some badassery in WF. Although I would prefer to see Sansa's journey in print first, I am not complaining about being able to see Sansa in season 5. :)

I think we're only so desperate to know the answers because we've had nothing new to talk about for the past 3-4 years.

:agree: Yes! I can also see lots of threads opening up with people trying to analyze season 5, picking apart what will be canon and what is just show material. Since, in the future, the show will confirm or deny popular theories like R=L=J, A+J=T, (f)Aegon, an so on.

I really would rather finish reading all of the books before the show gets to the end but it just isn't possible. I don't worry too much about spoilers, so I am not going to hesitate to watch the conclusion before GRRM gets around to publishing A Dream of Spring. The books are a far more rewarding experience for me, but there is no way in hell that I'm going to try to avoid watching the show while I wait for book 7.

This. Every single POV character ended aFfC/ aDwD in a cliffhanger. Even freaking Hotah was left on a "to be continued". Hell, even Quentyn's storyline left some loose ends because of the promise he made to the Tattered Prince.

This. It's been some 15 yrs since I first read the [first three] books the first time, and I'm dying to know the answer to so many questions! I think the show has many, many merits. But we know they'll get to the same ending via a different road, and I want to take that journey on GRRM's road.

You will have to abandon the internet and these forums to avoid spoilers. I can already see that there will be a wave of trolls here, spoiling the books in upcoming years.

Remember how the casters baby scene with white walkers took over the forums? No one was able to control it.

I don't think it's going to be possible to avoid the show completely, if you've made the decision to steer clear of it until GRRM has finished the books.

As has been noted above, that one little scene with Craster's baby took over the internet & gained a life of it's own.

Personally, I'm still going to be watching the show and reading the books.

I'll definetly watch the show, but I am disappointed that it will spoil the book. But, I want grrm to do the best job possible, so I don't want to rush him. I'll watch things and do my best to ignore it, thinking " that won't really happen" lol. But it will be sad not knowing more about the future of the story then everyone else.

Also, I kind of hope the show tells us r+l=J early, because I would love to just get that out in the open, whether it's book or show.

I had planned to do this but there is no way to avoid potential spoilers so I am resigned to watch it

  • 2 weeks later...

a real concern of mine now that i have watched season 5 opener...could the books (the unwritten portions of course) become overly influenced by the happening on the show...what if something were to happen to a main character on the show that fans really like...could GRRM let that change the outline in his mind...i would tend to think not, but who knows...

if HBO answers the question about Jon's parents, and goes with the popular answer for ratings, for example, which might not be GRRM's answer, what then?
