Movies and TV shows that lived up to your imagination. Or didn't.

While the Game of Thrones television series has been welcomed by most book readers, it has also has many detractors. Some things in the series are wonderful, others are so disappointing. We have had threads on the topic of which was better, the book or the movie, but on a slightly different note, what television series or movie has lived up to your imagination, meeting your expectations.

Even more narrowly speaking, are there at least parts of series or movies that really went beyond what you were hoping for?

So far in GoT, for example, I think the dragons have lived up to my imagination, and the direwolves. The characters of Davos Seaworth and Arya, but I could probably add ten more names, some of the casting has been stellar.

And what has looked pitiful to you? Have the extended views of the interior of the Tardis looked the way you thought they should? I hated the Weasley's house in the Harry Potter movies, and the location seemed all wrong.

I think the 2007 version of Persuasion ranks near the top of the list of Jane Austen adaptations that recreated what I imagined when I read the book.

What are your favourites, and what do you think were terrible?

Game of Thrones.

Well you can't have had too many expectations going into it, since you went into the Show having not read the books :dunno:

This topic overlaps slightly with the Fantasy adaptations thread so I'll repeat some of my stuff from there:

The Chronicles of Narnia films actually worked quite well at capturing Lewis' Narnia I felt, particularly the first film (which is the only one I have actually watched more than once, since I was roughly the target audience when it came out). So I guess that lived up to my imagination.

The first Harry Potter movies captured the fantastical, magical feel of Hogwarts I got from the books too, more so than the later films did. They lived up to expectations.

Golden Compass fell flat. Apart from the daemons, which seemed quite well done. They also had pretty good casting for Asriel and Coulter. Craig really seems to exude the authority and power Lord Asriel has. But yeah...not even a mediocre film, it was awful.

The Hunger Games has done a pretty good job capturing most things as I imagined them. Maybe I had a bit of a different idea about the Capitol, but it's still pretty nicely done. That said, I havent seen the third film (part 1! Seriously, what's with this stupid 'lets split the finale into two films' trend?)

This one is ongoing, but Poldark TV series is panning out pretty much as I pictured things in the book (I have just finished Ross Poldark today).

In terms of individual things within films/TV series, I'll echo you that the Dragons on GoT are brilliant. For that matter, so is Peter Jackson's CGI Smaug, in appearance at least. But I'll move swiftly on from that film. The less said about it the better...

Back to Harry Potter again, but Aragog and Fluffy were incredible, and the giant chessboard surpassed my expectations, I am pleased to say :)

I'll try and think of some more.

No one remembers it now but the first season of the show Sliders was extremly cool but only that one. My personal favorite were always "End of Days" where the earth is about to be hit by an asteriod before the time runs down. Its worth it to watch John Rhys Davis try to help the people of this world develop nuclear weapons to help stop the rock. You have to keep in mind that the first season was only 10 episodes. The other episodes were never any fun and by the thrid season they were just retooling the plots of old monster movies.

Its the example I always hold up when people go on and on about Firefly sure it was murdered early on but it didn't have the chance to be run into the ground either.

Game of Thrones

1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice

Blade runner

LotR trilogy

Beauty and the Beast (Disney)

The Shining

Just a few off the top of my head...there are quite a few.

The first two Harry Potters really disappointed me with their depiction of magic (which carried on into later films though there was some attempted mitigation). In particular things like the moving staircases and the way Olivander moved about his shop were far too mechanical.

On the other hand, visually speaking The Lord of the Rings fucking nailed it.

50 shades of Grey totally lived up to my nonexisting imagination on the subject.

Cinderella lived up to the buzz...

LOTR trilogy was so much and more... I am still in love with that lady from woodland realm.

Mladen,

Especially, the Galadriel freak out over her mirror. That was just awesome.

;)

Hey, if Cate Blanchett wants to freak out, you will sit and enjoy it... Unless she decides to do an homage to some horror movie. In that case, even I can't defend her...

GoT isn't "bad" but it is so much smaller than I imagined. As such it is enevitably disappointing. The tourney scene in the first season is a perfect illustration it looks like it was set in a ren faire not the 300 year old capital of the 7 kingdoms of Westeros.

The Red Weddino was a let down for me.

AGOT has become increasingly disappointing for me. I will still watch with hopes of it changing my mind (or, at least, having some redeeming moments for me) but the reasons I watch have certainly changed over time.

Also, I just caught The Hobbit: The battle of the Five Armies last night on dvd. While it was visually stunning much of the time there were certainly way too many parts where i just had to completely shut off my brain. I found myself asking "Why, PJ? Why?!" far too many times :dunno:

Lord of the Rings did a lot of things extremely well and in some cases even exceeded expectations, such as the portrayal of Gollum. Of course, there were some times it really didn't work, the Army of the Dead being the biggest miss in terms of how something looked compared to how I would have imagined it.

Blade runner

Apparently when Philip K. Dick was shown some early footage from the film he commented that the future looked just like he imagined it, and it's difficult to imagine how the films could have worked any better visually.

2001 : A Space Odyssey is another film that it's difficult to imagine looking any different.

In the one scene in the theater I had to call out "Shai Hulud!" It actually raised a chuckle.

Speaking of Shai Hulud, I'm not sure either of the Dune adaptations have really looked like they should. Lynch's movie does have some interesting visuals but a lot of it owes more to his imagination than Herbert's and it's let down by the limitations of 80s Special Effects. I think the Sci-Fi channel miniseries does a better job with the plot but some of the budgetary limitations are painfully obvious and I don't remember everyone wearing crazy hats in the book.

I actually didn't like Smaug that much, the more I think about it, they REALLY out did him tbh. He was just...TOO BIG and swimming in treasure??? Nooooo. I loved imagining him nestled on top of a big mound of it not bloody drowning in it

Here's my problem with GoT : sexposition. Why are 2 prostitutes having sex in the background when one of the most important characters in the series is revealing his backstory ? It's not the only problem per say, but after that I realised how to gauge my expectations. Battle of Blackwater Bay was awesome though. Also majority of the cast gives amazing performances.

What lived up to my expectations :

Firefly (Whedon's magnum opus, Buffy and Angel be damned)

Avatar and Pacific Rim (Got exactly what I expected)

Better Call Saul (Change that theme song though)

Blade Runner

Earthsea (The Books of course)

2000 AD's Judge Dredd
