Name the smartest and the dumbest decision that House Lannister ever made

It can be any member of House Lannister, and it doesn't have to be the same person making the best and worst decision ever.

Smartest:

Getting their hands on Casterly Rock.

Dumbest:

Refusing to pay back their debts to the Iron Bank.

Smartest: Rains of Castamere incident. Hands down. If Tywin hadn't dealt with that shit correctly, all the gold in Casterly Rock wouldn't have meant squat. Tytos had all that gold, it didn't keep him from nearly screwing everything up.

Dumbest: Not marrying Cersei off to a loyal Lannister bannerman pretty much the second the incest rumors came about and sticking her in the Westerlands, far far away from court.

Smartest - Bend the knee to Aegon, buy their time and then repay the Targs in kind 280 years later.

Dumbest - Cersei allowing the whole Ned Stark execution fiasco to even happen... They could have legitimized themselves and keep the realm strong in a single day, yet they sentenced westeros to war.

Oh there's a lot to chose from each

Smartest: gotta agree with those who are saying getting Casterly Rock. A non exhaustable gold mine, an extremely strong castle and control over local land and sea.

Dumbest: Many have already been said so ill go with a new one. Tywin moving from harrenhal to go west after Robb. What's the plan here? Go west, defeat robb and edmure, turn back to KL and then take out Stannis and save your family? Not likely

Smartest: Staying out of Robert's Rebellion until it was clear which side would win. A shrewd move but smart.

Dumbest: Alienating the smartest member of the family. Plotting betrayals behind his back and driving him to kill his own father. Leaving thl heir to The Rock to search out exiled Targaryens and ask funny existential questions about where whores go to everyone he meets.

Honarable Mention: Allowing twin siblings to copulate and secretly ruin the royal line of succession is pretty dumb too, but at least it was a power play.

The crazy thing is the smartest and dumbest might switch if Tyrion successfully allies with Dany and takes back Casterly Rock. Then fathers a line of likable Lannisters who aren't total tools.

Smartest: Putting Cersie and her spawn on the throne. That puts the Lannisters in the perfect position to basically be pawn brokers for the throne. Some have speculated that gold in Casterly Rock is drying up. Who cares? King's Landing will be paying the Lannisters interest until the end of time.

Dumbest: Pissing the Stark family off. No matter how great the summer is, winter is coming. The Stark family is due for some Texas Chainsaw style revenge.

Smartest Decision: Getting Casterly Rock (of course)

Worst Decision:

Refusing the let the only child of Tywin with any talent at ruling or managing a castle actually rule the castle. If he has to marry to live with shame marriage, so what? Figure it out. A dwarf woman like Penny would be the best bet. But the important thing is giving credit where credit is due.

Tywin being an asshole to his son led to said son murdering him, which was the nail in the coffin for Tywin's plans.

I'm pretty down though for Tyrion being Lann the Clever reborn, so it might all actually work out in the end, sort of.
