[WOW SPOILERS] Paralells between Aerys Targaryen and Robert Arryn

Did anyone else notice the paralells between the Mad King and Sweetrobin? Both grow suspicious to the point where they won't let anyone cut their hair. Both suspect (probably with good reason) that a relative (Rhaegar/Harry the heir) is trying to overthrow them. They both like to execute people who displease them in a cruel and specific way (burn them/make them fly). And they both love the same woman (Joanna/Sansa) as the man who rules for them (Tywin/Littlefinger).

What do you think this means? Is Robert headed down the same road as Aerys?

I'm not so sure. Aerys was actually well-liked as a youth and a young man before plunging into madness in the latter years. I can't see Robin living very long, and I kind of hope he doesn't. I get really annoyed just reading his parts in the books, and he would be a horrible Lord of the Vale.

I know, there are differences of course, and I don't mean to compare them at the same age. It's more like Robert is a mini-version of Robert, and he is going through a similar development much faster. I was stricken by the fact that they both wouldn't let anyone cut their hair, and found there are other paralells.

If you mean getting killed, yeah i would say its safe to assume Robert Arryn is following the same path. Kid's days are numbered.

By heading down the same road, I mean that there will be more paralells, so getting killed would certainly be one of them. But maybe after doing something really paranoid and unexpected, creating some sort of uprising, a paralell to burning the Starks and demanding the heads of Robert and Ned. I don't know what though, maybe executing some of the Lords Declarant, destroying Littlefingers plans.

Robin is smarter than people give him credit for, and his behavior is obviously due to Lysa's parenting rather than any inherent madness like with Aerys.

I just hope he throws Harry the Heir out the Moon Door  It would be a hilarious twist

The latest chapter surprised me. I thought he was a stupid kid, but he knows what's going on.

I kind of like Harry. Besides, the Eyrie is closed.

Well, when it comes to psychological illness, I'd say it is most often a question of both inheritence and environment, not just one or the other. And I do see a resemblance between Aerys going paranoid when locked up and isolated at Duskendale, having his life constanhly threatened, and Robert growing suspicious when locked up and isolated at the Eyrie, with a perceived constant threat ti his life.

I took pity on SweetRobin when he spoke spot on about Harry the Heir. That was a very sobering moment. Littlefinger killed off both his parents but I think Littlefinger is certainly his biological dad. The boy has no resemblence to Jon Arryn by description but is small in stature, like Baelish. This kid is lord in all but name and is infatuated with Sansa/Alayne. She does care for him, it is noticeable.

Also, I would say that Sansa has a lot in common with Rhaella.

Rhaella's description by Ser Barristan:

The queen [Dany's] mother was always mindful of her duty.

Sansa's description by Tyrion:

She is nothing if not dutiful, this wife of mine.

Both were abused by the men they were betrothed to (only in Rhaella's case she actually wed the guy) while Sansa managed to escape.

Both Robert Arryn and Aerys have an obsession with breasts.

Aerys:

she looked as if some beast had savaged her, clawing at her thighs and chewing on her breasts.

Aerys insisted that his own food taster would suckle at the breasts of the wet nurse, to be certain that there was no poison on her nipples

Aerys also insults Joanna at court by asking her if her breasts were ruined due to rearing children.

Robert hasn't been weaned until his mother's death and in AFFC he often sneaks in to Sansa's room and "nuzzles her breasts."

Robert and Aerys have a romantic relationship (for lack of a better word) with a relative. Aerys marries Rhaella (though there is no love between the two of them) and Robert has some form of puppy love towards Alayne.

There are quite a bit parallels between Sweetrobin and Aerys though I think their stories will end differently. Sansa manages to escape Rhaella's fate and Sweetrobin will live to grow up a decent human being (there are signs that he is already improving under Sansa's care). If Sansa is correct, then Robert will get over his paranoia once he has his winged knights protecting him.

That would be good, Robert changing in the goodhearted care and nurturing, with boundaries, of Sansa. I do hope that will be the case. Although, I am worried he will do something paranoid and unexpected (as another paralell to Aerys) like killing off a couple of Lords Declarant or maybe become suspicious of his winged knights (like Aerys becoming convinced Jaime Lannister was TKOTLT). We already see Robert grow, and with that comes agency. He is still a boy though, with not much real power, and the Eyrie is closed, so it's not so easy as to make someone fly, so maybe your positive future scenario is more likelier.

Neither would Rickon, though. IMHO, in case of Robin and Rickon it is a childish expression of grief, not paranoia like in Aerys's case. Little Robert doesn't seem particularly afraid of people wearing weapons, for one.

Of course. I don't want to suggest the hair thing means Robert is as paranoid as Aerys. Not at all. It's more a question of literay paralells that may or may not mean something.

We have yet to see Robert's reaction to Harry's coat of arms. Sansa said that he will be displeased with it and she noticed that he was watching the two of them dance. If Sweetrobin does do something "evil" it would probably involve Harry and his jealousy.

The sample chapter does cut off at the moment something could happen. I would love SweetRobin to stand in his chair and tell off Harry and command him to get away from her and announce to everyone what he thinks of him and his intentions.

Awww, Sweetrobin is getting revenge on Alayne's behalf, how cute. I can already hear Sansa yelling "karma is a b*tch Harry."
