What happened to the Valyrian Steel sword Lamentation?

Recommended Posts

WOIAF states that the sword was "lost" when it's owner Ser Willum Royce was killed in the Storming of the Dragonpit.

If we assume that dragonfire has a role in creating valyrian steel then that would mean that dragonfire can at least damage if not destroy it as well.

So does that mean that Lamentation was broken/destroyed by dragonfire and no one simply had the motivation, time or skill to reforge it?

Did Ser Willum drop the sword on his death and it got stolen by a survivor with said-survivor's descendants hanging up the sword in their home with it's true origins lost?

Was the sword stolen and that's why Ser Willum ended up dying?

It could have wound up in another house/knight's hands under a different name. I think our best bet here is to examine the list of Valyrian blades that have featured in the series (http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Valyrian_steel#List_of_known_Valyrian_steel_blades) and see which are ruled out, and which are not, by the timeline. For instance, it can't be Heartsbane (in House Tarly for 500 years) or Ice (the Ice of the main series was in House Stark for over 400 years). Red Rain, perhaps? We don't know when it came into Drumm hands - possibly during Dagon's raiding. The circumstances surrounding Lamentation's disappearance mean it could have wound up in opportunistic (but not particularly skilled or prestigious) hands, explaining how Hilmar Drumm defeated the knight wielding it with nothing more than a wooden cudgel.

If Red Rain is indeed the sword of House Reyne then I would kind of imagine that the Red Kraken's raids is a more likely time period.
