Daredevil [Spoilers for all S1 episodes]

Sci-2

Recommended Posts

I've technically finished the season. I had it running in the background as I was doing stuff so I think I missed a lot of stuff. Like, how did Vanessa suddenly become this person who is willing to call in mercenaries for her murderous boyfriend? Is Murdoch even actually blind or is it just a form of color blindness and he fakes being blind to keep certain attention off him? Is the old lady from a different planet? Is Murdoch from a different planet? Where did Claire go? What was Black Sky, or is this something that waits for next season? Who the hell is Betsy?

Several people, me included, have finished the show, but all the discussion is still taking place in the original thread. Once it gets locked one of these spoiler threads will probably see more activity.

Is the old lady from a different planet?

Probably from K'un L'un, the place where Iron Fist got his training and superpowers, or at least an associated city. If they are doing the whole eight cities of heaven thing from the comics, that is. Even then the question will be how they expain it, whether it's true magic or something like Asgard's sufficiently advanced alien technology.

Where did Claire go?

Someplace that could afford her salary, would be my guess. My impression as the show went on was that they had to cut a few corners, and with a bit more money Claire would have appeared in a few more episodes.

What was Black Sky, or is this something that waits for next season?

A sequel hook.

Who the hell is Betsy?

Motivation for a tertiary, if somewhat important, character. As with my guess above, she might have shown up in person if there had been more money available. That whole thing about the suitmaker seemed relatively pointless, particularly considering he only wore the red suit for a single scene.

My guess is that he's an Inhuman. But they could be introducing something completely different.

And I think Claire will show up in Luke Cage, if nothing else.

Murdock is blind. His other senses create an aggregate image in his brain that gives him the approximation of sight (and badassness) that looks like the opening credits. That was my take, anyway.

I thought the opening wasn't how he sees, but rather a commentary of how all the blood that's been spilled has created Hell's Kitchen and eventually created Daredevil.

Murdock claims he sees the world as if it's "on fire." We actaully see Claire through his eyes, and it's a bit different than the opening credits.

The only thing that throws me off about this show is the use of Hell's Kitchen. As I live there today, it feels weird the way they use HK as a city, similar to the way Arrow uses Starling City and Flash uses Central City. The way they've created HK, they've made it into a city versus being a collection of 10-12 blocks. It doesn't really take away anything from me in terms of story but it's weird when they say 51st and 10th and it looks nothing like what it is.

You're saying in reality it wasn't as badly damaged by the Chitauri attack as the show leads us to belief?

I thought that was odd too. I'm still not clear whether Fisk was trying to take control of the whole city or just Hell's Kitchen.

Finally finished. I thought it was pretty damn good. Some elements were excellent and most of those were in the first 5 episodes. I'm not sure if it was Drew Goddard's departure midway or if the pacing just went amiss but I think the show wasn't as solid post Nobu. Still there were some great moments even in the final episodes. Westly's death got to me (odd for a villain) but I admired his loyalty to Fisk and Fisk's reaction. There were also some nice moments expanding on how Matt "sees" and the Flashbacks on Foggy and Matt's relationship,

Where the latter episodes lacked for me was in getting from A to C often felt like it was missing out B. I don't think their takedown of Fisk was really earned, they merely lucked out on having one guy rat on him. Would Fisk really allow one of his cops to know his entire operation? It flies in the face of everything he'd been doing throughout the series to make him untouchable. I feel it would have been more powerful if, out of powerless frustration, Daredevil hospitalised Fisk.

Same with Foggy and Matt's friendship fixing. It just seemed to happen after Ben's death which I didn't feel was enough to fix things (they barely knew him).

Did Rosario Dawson suddenly get called up for a film? She just seemed to disappear from the plot (which in fairness was addressed) and made me wonder what the point was.

Another problem I had was with Fisk. Vincent D did an excellent job, no doubt, but I'm just not sure how well the "manchild" interpretation of Fisk worked. How did he get to such a place when appearing so nervous and unconfident. Would people buy him in mainstream politics, let alone in organised crime? It just felt like an exagerrated form of Tony Soprano and there were several times I thought "James Gandolfino would have nailed this part". Not that Vincent D is bad I just don't think the show's take really works. Maybe this is something they can tweak next season?

The other villains were fun. I feel they made a mistake killing Westly but it was the show's most meaningful death. Owsley was excellent (I loved the easter egg of him trying his suit on) and he'd make a pleasant return in future.

Stick and the Hand were great teases for the future. I don't know who the shirtless man was talking to stick at the end of one episode. Any ideas?

The fight scenes were amazing. Some of the best I've seen and I think the stuntman playing Darevil was also acting (unless that was Charlie Cox) as it was palpable when the character was furious or exhausted or hurt. I hope the new suit will still allow for that type of physical acting. Speaking of the suit, I felt really uncomfortable when Daredvil was beating on someone who was mentally retarded. That really got to me and I felt like a more sincere apology was owed or some reflection on his beat first ask questions later. A similar thing with the junkie (although he was far less innocent). Those moments just felt a little too Frank Miller.

Marvel netflix are off to a great start and the approach of "very long movie" really works for these characters. I hope the same approach is being taken with the other shows. I also hope we don't have to wait 2 plus years before another Daredevil. There's so many other things they can do with Daredevil.

I quite like how they are being coy about how Matt "sees". It's probably wise not to as everyone probably has their own theory.

I do think the titles are how his "radar" works with some artistic license. While it appears to just be blood pouring over things it is constantly shimmering and "growing" in multiple directions so I like to think it's something like that.

That said the bit with Karen at the end to me was her becoming more clear because of the handshake like the tactile side gave MAtt a better image of her. Like I say, I think it's very clever of them to not show us his POV directly. I liked the nods to him being aware of things "out of sight" and I'd like to see more moments where he talks to people without facing them, etc. Although i can understand why Matt doesn't want people to know he's blind as Daredevil.

Just finished watching the series. Thought it started great, first five episodes or so were incredible. Second half was good but felt simultaneously rushed and slow sometimes, if that makes sense. Like individual scenes seemed to go on too long with not that much happening in them, but then we'd just jump to another scene without really building the required connection. Too many individual long slow scenes that didn't flow organically, making the whole thing seem rushed and jerky. I don't know if I'm making sense here, I'm pretty tired.

That all sounds more negative than I wanted it to. I still really liked it over all. Cox and D'Onofrio killed it, D'Onofrio especially; Fisk was a brilliant villain. The action scenes were really well choreographed and directed. Good acting all around. Good score. Solid 8/10 from me.

My guess would be he's connected to Iron Fist in some way.

He's credited as Stone, who is Stick's pupil in the comics. Scars match but hair doesn't http://i.imgur.com/P8lQRvD.jpg

Madam Gao is probably Crane Mother, we'll almost certainly be back for Iron Fist.

And if you wanted to know where Stan Lee's cameo was, final episode when the detective who killed his partner is confessing: there's a picture frame on the wall behind the duty sergeants desk.
