I am afraid it is unlikely to be back for long stretches at a time until the season is over with, unless the current issues we are investigating turn out to have an overall impact on server load.

FTR, at least in my case, I have my notifications back. Some of us lost that, specially notifications for being quoted. So... one door closes but...

I'm not getting notifications, I can't search my own posts, I can't click on people's profiles, I can't see any indication when I enter a forum of what threads I've read or participated in. I just simply can't follow anything I have read or responded to. It's getting hard to navigate this way. Can I donate somewhere to get more server oomph? :bawl:

We actually have two servers after being forced to upgrade pretty much every previous season. They more or less handled it last year and should handle it about the same way this year ... but we have an error somewhere that we have not been able to diagnose. It causes things to spin out of control much more easily, it appears.

FYI, just to follow up on Linda's post, there appear to have been two things that were going wrong since the season started.

First, one of the switches that handles the private network between Skrog (the server that handles the web/PHP stuff) and Segfault (the server that handles the database) started to malfunction. That was replaced earlier by the colocation provider, but during that time the connection between Skrog's PHP handler and Segfault's MySQL instance was bogging down.

Second, however, the most recent MediaWiki upgrade had a change in how it handled caching; I didn't realize that so didn't account for this during the upgrade—mea culpa—and that caused issues with all of the optimizations. It happened sporadically enough (but ruined everything when it did) that I wasn't able to diagnose it until the episode tonight, when it happened pretty reliably and I was able to see what was going wrong.

A couple of hours ago (as of the time I post this), I tweaked how things are optimized; it seems to be running much better now. Ran and I are still keeping an eye on things to make sure everything's solid with the tweak, though. :)

As you can see I am brand new to this forum. I would like to ask if these server problems are the reason I can't upload a picture to my profile, and if this is also the reason why, when I try to log on, it seems to require several attempts each time? Thanks.
