Ser Arthur Dayne Ser Gregor Clegane

Recommended Posts

How does a fight between these two go down? Let's say Dayne stays at the Red Keep during RR, and he walks in on Clegane murdering Rhaegar's children. To my mind: Clegane looks up, growls, draws his greatsword with one hand but the Sword of the Morning is too quick for him, he sprints up, dances around Clegane and drawing Dawn strikes at the back of his knee, Clegane stumbles and Dayne stabs him through the underside of his shoulder where his armor is weak and rams his way to Clegane's heart and the Mountain rides no more.

Dayne has to find and hit the gaps in Clegane's armour, if the fight goes to the ground or Gregor gets hold of Arthur's sword hand it's the end...

Now Dayne is top as top can get in sword skill, but using the same weapon as Gregor and having much less strenght.... the gaps folks, the gaps... and BEFORE Gregor get's a hold on him...

That was the difference between Robert vs Gregor, and Arthur Dayne fighting Gregor... amount of power to hold The Mountain and especially WEAPON CHOICE... let's remind ourselves this guys are knights not BJJ black belts

Gregor is over twice Dayne's size and wears armor THREE TIMES THICKER THAN STANDARD PLATE, which is already nigh-immune to most weapons of this time. Including swords. He is also a very skilled warrior himself. Realistically, Dayne runs away screaming and crying, trying to do whatever he can to avoid fighting this beast, but is unable to. Then the two melee, and if Dayne isn't immediately killed, which he probably will be, it quickly devolves into grappling as Dayne finds his sword does literally nothing to Gregor's armor. Then Gregor smashes his fucking head in, LIKE THIS:

True but there is a major difference in weaponry, Gregor uses a big ass sword of normal steel, Dawn is on par with and possibly superior to VS.

I still think there's a lot be said for whatever the hell Dawn is made of vs. normal (even heavy) plate.

Didn't help him when he got killed by two nobodies (in the combat department, anyway). Also didn't let him immediately defeat the Smiling Knight, who 15-year-old Jaime could hold off for a while. Regular plate made for a regular man is basically immune to sword attacks, except for some special cases. Unless Dayne's sword is a lightsaber, he's going to lose this match very badly. And heck, maybe even if it is a lightsaber, since Gregor has a huge reach advantage as part of being seven and a half feet tall.

No doubt Dawn is superior but if it doesn´t hit a gap, it's not going to cut the plate armour Clegane is wearing, a warhammer would but a sword (no matter what kind of sword would need to find gaps)... and Gregor is not going to stand still, if he holds Dayne´s arm it's over...

Of course if Gregor stands there swinging his sword and missing UNTIL Dayne hits a gap.... but that's difficult... Arthur would need to choose another weapon or roll the dice on Gregor's stupidity and hope he doesn't remember to catch his arm and break his neck

Yes but could that have been that he underestimated his opponents? Doubtful he would do the same with Gregor. \

I think people are forgetting that a lightly armored Oberyn brought Gregor to the ground, and he was too focused on a confession to finish the fight.

Just read page 801 again.

People are making far too much of Gregor's size and strength. The guy is not unbeatable, and Oberyn should have killed him. Alas he was too worried about a confession and allowed his pride to dictate common sense. The spear pinned Gregor to the ground, piercing his "fabled" armor. If Oberyn would have taken a second weapon and shoved it through Gregors ugly face, the Mountain would be done.

Say what you will about Gregor, I don't think metal armor can stop a lightsaber.

It can't, lightsabers even cut through bullshit-Star-Wars-magic-metal. But that was my point. It would need to be a lightsaber for Dayne to have a chance. But even if he does have a lightsaber, which he doesn't, there's still a chance that Gregor will kill him before he ever gets to use it.

Actually, looking at what they've actually done, there's really nothing supporting Dayne being that great. His skill comes entirely from reputation and talk (and his sword, according to Gerold). Gregor killed Beric Dondarrion, he killed him twice. He defeated the Red Viper after the Viper both prepared specifically for this one battle and had a shit load of luck. He fought to a draw with the Hound. He has led vanguards into battle several times, always at the front. He has killed literally dozens of men-at-arms and knights. By contrast, what has Dayne done? Defeat a bandit in a (apparently close) dual, and then lose in a 2 on 1 fight with average noblemen?

Yes but could that have been that he underestimated his opponents? Doubtful he would do the same with Gregor.

If he underestimated literally every single opponent he ever fought, then he's a terrible knight.
