What happened to House Whent, why were their rights to Harrenhal taken away?

This is a question I asked myself many times and If ever I came across the answer, I simply cannot remember so I really hope to clear it up now. It's obviously not so significant or important to call for urgent explanation but all the same, I kind of would like to know what in the heck happened to them? My hunch is it has something to do with Roberts Rebellion because I think House Whent supported the Targaryens but I know Hoster Tully's wife was a Whent, right?

THANK YOU in advance.

I think that for some reasons Shella and her husband couldn't have children. The house was very young, so there weren't any distant cousins or other branches...

Lord {Walter Whent}, a previous lord of the house, who was rich and open-handed, and hosted the tourney at Harrenhal where Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark met.

Lady {Shella Whent}, his wife.[4]

{Their four sons}. Deceased by 298 AC.

{Their daughter}. The reigning queen of love and beauty at the start of the tourney at Harrenhal in 281 AC, called "the fair maid". Deceased by 298 AC.

{Ser Oswell Whent}, Walter's brother, and a member of Aerys II's Kingsguard. Known for his black humor, he died at the Tower of Joy.

{Minisa Whent}, deceased wife of Lord Hoster Tully and mother to Catelyn, Lysa and Edmure.

Wynafrei Whent, married to the ninth son of Lord Walder Frey, Danwell. She had no progeny, only many stillbirths and miscarriages.

{Sarya Whent}, fifth wife of Lord Walder Frey. Deceased with no progeny.

The apparent poor fertility of the Whent women is remarkable. Wynafrei, Sarya and Lady Shella were all childless, and Shella Whent is the last of her line.[1] Only Minisa and her line proved fertile, although she died in childbirth

Whents were infertile...

you say you think they can't have children and then quote text which stated they has five children..?

The wiki text on Shella being childless is completely wrong...

Shella yielded Harrenhal, as J. Stargaryen said, during the war. It was given to Janos Slynt, and Petyr Baelish after him. Lady Shella was the last of her line, her husband and children having predeceased her. She died around the time of Storm of Swords/Feast for Crows.

probably cos you would have to take a castle off of someone to give it to Janos Slynt and Harrenhal is ideal because

1.The ruler of Harrenhal is an old lady who without any heirs or soldiers who is unlikely to cause any problems if you revoke it

2. It happens to already be under the control of the Lannisters, if you started predistributing castles before the war is won, it might make your enemies more stubborn when it comes to surrendering knowing that they would not be given lenient terms

3. It is very big, making it a bigger prize to offer to Janos (especially if he is unaware of 'the curse')

House Whent pretty much disappeared for the sake of plot

As well as the Darrys. What's the link? They were Targaryen supporters. Oswell Whent and his family helped Rhaegar with the Tourney, Willem Darry ran with the kids and Jonotor was a KG. I bet they knew a lot about Rhaegar and his intentions of removing Aerys. The same for the oldest Daynes: Ashara and Edric's father. Of course, they've been killed.

It has nothing to do with being Targaryen supporters. It has to do with Shella Whent being old and heirless, Raymun and Lyman Darry being dead, and both castles being under Lannister control. William Mooton was likewise a Targaryen supporter, and he's not been dispossessed.

It's not at all clear that the Lady of Harrenhal who was the mother of four sons and a daughter is Shella Whent, is it? We actually don't really know anything about the Whent family tree. Shella could, for instance, be the spinster sister of the Lord Whent who hosted the tourney. Or his maiden aunt.

I mean, externally, not in the narrative. GRRM has eliminated, probably purposely, a lot of people who knew Rhaegar.

You mean, other than the fact that GRRM said, when asked, that Shella was the mother of the "fair maid"? :) ;)
