H. P. Lovecraft, your favorite stories

I've only read around 15 of his stories so far, and I'd say that The music of Erich Zann is my favourite amongst them. Short, concise, and excellent at giving chills.

Hmm I'll read that one next, I've only read 3 of them myself, just started reading today, they seem quite interesting.

Just read them in any order which makes you comfortable - for "the favourite" varies from person to person. Friend who introduced me to HPL thought of Herbert West - the reanimator as his favourite story, although it's generally considered as one of Lovecraft's weakest works and IMO does indeed have serious pacing problems.

Just started reading Lovecraft. What are your favorite stories?

(Also, if you've never read Lovecraft pls do, it's public domain so it doesn't cost anything)

The Dunwich Horror is always a great for starting to get into Lovecraft.

I just read "Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and his Family"

Great stuff, chilling read.

This is not a complete list of those I have enjoyed, just of those I like particularly well. In no particular order:

Psychopompos: A Tale in Rime. This is not generally counted among his tales, because it's a poem. But it is a tale as well, and one of my favorites.

The Shadow over Innsmouth.

Dreams in the Witch-House.

The Doom that Came to Sarnath. Short but sweet. Avoid Joshi's version, which kills some of the poetry by reinserting excess verbiage from early drafts in order to generate new copyright.

The Lurking Fear: Along with "Herbert West - Reanimator" this is one of his most shamelessly pulpy efforts, both written for "Home Brew" where the editor's instructions were "You can't be too morbid" or something. Some look down on them for that reason, but I found them to be a blast.

The Rats in the Walls.

At the Mountains of Madness: One of his longest ... and his best.

Apart from the obvious must-reads (Shadow Over Innsmouth, Call of Cthulhu, Dunwich Horror ...) I really like The Mound, The Last Test, Winged Death, Pickman's Model and The Man of Stone.

I've not read them all. The best I've read so far are "The Colour Out of Space", "The Rats in the Walls", "The Whisperer in Darkness", "At the Mountains of Madness", and "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."

:agree:

There's a German gothic novel called "Lovecraft" by Reinhard Kleist. Worth checking out, I'd say.
