Jon is a average sword fighter at best.. The Joe Flacco of sword fighting V.2

He is, what... 15/16? Abit unfair to judge him and compare him to people older than him. Also, Meryn Trant is an average swordsman. Jon would wipe the floor with Meryn Trant.

Meryn would destroy Jon, Jon could easily beat Boros, but Meryn?I highly doubt it..In a few years maybe right now just no!

Jon is about the same age as Jaime was when he saw his first real fighting. I have to Agree with SerBert on this. Too young to be compared with any truly great swordsman. I think the encounter with Mance/Rattleshirt was proof of that. Right now, I think he lacks the muscle to overcome a serious contender.

It's not really the point of Jon's character though is it? The realm needs wits not more widows.

Jon is 17 right now..

Jaime won is first melee at 13, at 15 saved Lord Crakehall from Big Belly Ben and held is own against the Smilling Knight who is said to be like a smaller Gregor Clegane..

Daemon Blackfire and Maegor Targaryen were considered excelent swordsmans since about that age so..

I know about the melee but it's hardly a true test of a man's worth with a sword. All this we can get from the Wiki. Fair enough he's 17 but Jon spent years beyond and at the Wall while Jaime would have had a slightly more privaleged existence. Not to mention better training and a better diet, I bet.

Point still stands, Jon could turn out to be an excellent swordsmen so long as he doesn't bleed to death, though it's not really the point of his character. He's obviously superior to the unskilled men at arms that train at Castle Black, but not naturally gifted. He just needs to work on prying the damn thing from it's scabbard! And maybe upper body strength.

I am just going to say this.

By stories end.

Trant will probably be dead. Jaime may be dead. Selmy will probably be dead.

Jon will likely live or sacrifice his person for the realm, but I think he outlives the story. Which ever happens, his story will be more important than the combination of the best swords.

In other words, there is more to success than swinging sword, and the phrase "any given field (Sunday)" fits nicely here.

If Jon fought Dayne and Dayne slipped on a grumkin allowing Jon to lop his head off, all of Dayne's abilities wouldn't matter. Dead is dead. You can argue that if Dayne did not slip, he would have won. But that really is a moot point. Just like arguing if Zidane did not headbutt Materazzi, France would have had a better chance to win. In the end of the day, it matters little. Gli Azzuri won. Game over.

Jon is not going to lose to Trant, Jaime, or any other great sword fighter in the realm. He may die, true, but not likely at the hands of some guard in white. He may die from dragon fire or something similar.

Because this is fiction, and Jon is most likely the title of the book or a part of it, Jon wins every battle he faces (mock fights don't count). If he faces Jaime, he will win. If he faces Trant, he will win. If he faces Jorah, he will win. If he faces Robert Strong, he will win. Why because the story is about the Starks and Jon, not about those people while they are included. This isn't real life, Jon will win because he is meant to.

Exactly what i meant in version 1...

Good ol' boy Jon is a well rounded martial mind, and just gifted enough in a couple areas that makes him a survivor...

How many times we choose the most well rounded car or fighter in video games? at least i do it many times...

And that´s why i don´t want and he very likely won´t become a legendary swordsman... what did that do to so many men??

Robert in his prime was the warrior incarnate in skill and mind...

What would happen to him against the Others??... with an obsidian warhammer he would kill dozens of them, until his personality would prevent him to give up...he would retreat if he had men to protect, but alone? no way, he would kill and kill until one Other uses magic and Instant Fatality.... RIP Bobby

Jon would see he's not that good, would call ghost and run to safety at the smallest of chances... and long lives Jonny Boy
