Diet Pepsi soon without aspartame in the US.

Regardless of the health science, if aspartame is the reason Diet Pepsi tastes so damn gross I'm all for getting rid of it. If its not the reason, let's find the real criminal, I say!

Aspartame (and saccharin as well) were discovered by licking/tasting the stuff by accident. And then re-tasted deliberately in the lab. The saccharin guy took 10gms of it and waited 24 hrs to see what would happen. That sort of thing wont fly these days, oh to live in those wild times.

No point to this anecdote, just thought I'd share.

I'm trying to eliminate my soft drink addiction totally because it's done considerable damage to the toned abs I used to have. And it had taken me half a year of daily exercise to get them. But I hate the taste of diet drinks in general; I can't abide the aftertaste of the sweetener. I started to lose weight a while back by switching to Coke Life, which replaces about 40 percent of its sugar with stevia, a natural plant product ten times sweeter than sugar but with no calorific content. It just tastes much the same as regular Coke, but slightly more cinnamony. I really do believe that all soft drinks companies should start doing the same, because it gives a far better set of choices than either to drink something that tastes like it was concocted in a chemical lab or to drink something you like the taste of that rots your teeth and makes you fat.

Tesla - It was a mortician who discovered that. The chemical was then in use because it was a corpse preserving agent.

Aspartame is a synthetic sugaring substance that decomposes when heated. Unless you put your coke uin the sun or in a very hot place or heat it, I doubt you'll encounter any problems.

Isn't coke supposed to be taken chillled anyway? I've never ttried warm soft drinks.

Most diet drinks make the skin on my face tingle. Really weird feeling.

Not that I plan on drinking this new Diet Pepsi, but I wonder if aspartame was causing that reaction.

I don't think there are significant health effects related to aspartame at all. It just tastes bad, the same as all other sugar substitutes with the exception of the entirely natural stevia. The banning of asp[artame strikes me as having about the same basis as the long-standing ban in Canada of absinthe because thujone is regarded as poisonous, even though it exists in absinthe in a completely harmless, if mildly stimulant quantity, and nutmeg, in its raw state, is a potentially fatal hallucinogen which can be bought by anyone in any grocery store.

I couldn't remember how aspartame was discovered, so I googled it, and this was the second link that popped up.

I like to mix a bit of aspartame in with my raw milk, for a combined risk/benefit factor of 0*

*guessing here, I haven't actually done the math. But i will say i haven't seen any change in my rate of birth defects, athelete's foot, or brain tumors.

How ridiculous.

When I worked at Yoplait the fruit that got mixed with the base (plain yogurt) was sweetened with aspartame. Good luck eating fruit yogurts (whether diet or full fat) made with unsweetened fruit as you'll be surprised by how dull and flat they taste.
