Changes after casting?

What happens when you cast a person for the role and their story is not created yet, or their character changes?

What happens when an important character's actor does not like the new story? What if the casting doesnt match?

Yes, I'm talking about a few examples in GoT

Emilia refusing to do nude scenes (even when the script may needed it with Daario)

The first Daario itself leaving and suddenly presenting a new one

Elaria's role changing suddenly and I think the casting doesnt fit.

Jamie , the handsome evil character suited him so well that the mature one doesnt bring out what he may have been originally cast for.

Any other characters who may have been cast mainly for one role and their character changed to something else now?

The writers knew about Jaime's arc before he was cast. Unless they were being extremely shortsighted, they would have looked for that stuff too.

  • It is only rumoured that Emilia refuses to do nude scenes. After that story broke, she appeared nude in the eighth episode of Season 3. From reading her interviews, Emilia seems to have some concerns about appearing constantly nude. She has a right to be not overly exploited (particularly considering the nudity imbalance in the show) and it's not necessary for her to be exposed in post-sex scenes (For the record, I would love another Emilia nude scene as she's an attractive woman but I think we should respect all the actors choice regarding this. Sex and nudity is great but it doesn't necessarily need to be portrayed onscreen if the actors aren't into it or feel it isn't right for a scene).

  • It's rumoured that Daario 1.0 left to star in a Transporter film. I don't particularly like recasts but they happen! I eventually get used to the new actor. I think Huisman is a good Daario who is capable of being charming and cocky like his book counterpart. His style is different from Skrein's but both work in different ways. I just wish the showrunners had made that character a little bit more flamboyant so he's closer in line with the book version and a bit more memorable.

  • The showrunners really enjoyed Varma and wanted to give her more material on the show. I thought Varma was a great presence in Season 4 so I'm not opposed to the larger role she has this season (although I would still like Arianne too). I'm cool with the revenge plot. I just wish the other Dornish characters would recognise that Ellaria is out-of-character and mad with grief. I would then hope Ellaria has a big cathartic scene where she realises the fruitlessness of revenge and becomes more diplomatic like her book character. I have a feeling it's not going to happen though. :(

  • I think Nikolaj has always been excellent portraying all shades of Jaime. He's been let down by bad writing every now and then. I was Unsullied when watching Season 1 and I remember being intrigued by Nikolaj, in particular, because he managed to convey a lot of humanity beneath his smug, asshole, Prince-Charming-from-Shrek demeanour.

Nikolaj was very convincing playing the handsome evil brother and he's still very good now. Great actor!

Did you hear the comments on the DVD by David and Dan? They talked about casting Daenerys and how difficult it was to find someone who could play emotional and to play a strong person. Emilia apparently was the only one they saw who could play both convincingly.

They cast someone else for Dany originally, and even shot the initial pilot with her, before recasting.

Speaking of recasting, Catelyn was recast too after the initial pilot was shot. Jennifer Ehle playing Cat would've been an onscreen reunion between her and Headey from Possession. Ehle left for family reasons, if I recall, but I think Tazmin Merchant was just recast.

What sucks about Varma is they've given her complete garbage that doesn't fit her character. Other than a paycheck, they've done her a disservice. I would have preferred she make a one season appearance with a decent performance than two seasons where they ruin her character.

Come on man. Really? I know she's been handed a lot of garbage but you can't just blame the writers. Her performance and all the sand snakes for that matter have been like syfy original pictures level bad.

I've got no complaints with Varma's acting whatsoever. The Sand Snakes have been a bit goofy, but I haven't viewed her in that fashion.

As for Clarke, it boggles the mind that people complain about that so much about her, but pretty much not at all about any of the other female characters. How many major female characters in this show get nude? Lena Heady never has. Natalie Dormer was nude in one scene in season 2 and hasn't been since. Shae was nude, but the part required it much moreso than the other major female roles (and even then, she is hardly a character on the level as the others). That's been about it I think. So why don't we hear all the complaints about them? Her not being nude has not harmed any of those scenes at all. I get it, she's very attractive (by far the most attractive woman in the show IMHO). But there are plenty of other ways to see nudity if you want. BTW, there is no proof whatsoever that her not being nude hasn't been a decision on the writers and the director's part over the actress.

The mature one? What mature one? :dunno: NCW is currently playing Larry Lannister, the incompetent and befuddled knight who's not very bright.

I say thanks every day for the fact that we got Emilia Clarke for Dany, who can legitimately pull off the most beautiful woman in the world description Dany gets in the books as well as the strength, conviction and arrogance the character has. You've described my view on Tamzin Merchant perfectly. She looks like an alien. Trying to imagine her ever pulling off any of Dany's scenes successfully is quite a challenge for me. :P

She either got pregnant or her children needed more care. I remember it had something to do with her children.

I think Jennifer Ehle would have been great as Catelyn--not that Michelle hasn't done a great job, but I really like Jennifer Ehle, and I'd love to see that initial pilot where she's playing Catelyn. I've been a big fan of her since the BBC's Pride & Prejudice (1995), she is mostly known for corset roles, and while this too is a corset role technically it's a vastly different type of corset role than the type we usually see her in (like Possession, Pride & Prejudice, or even Wilde) and I think a good opportunity to have expanded what she was known for and perhaps the roles she was being offered.

Though Katie Dickie and Michelle look very much like sisters, while I can't really say the same about Jennifer, so we likely would have gotten a different Lysa, or the difference in appearance would have really been noticeable that Catelyn was the prettier one.

Ahh well... if anyone has that footage though...

I know, but apparently Tamzin Merchant wasn't the right person to play Daenerys.

I like Emilia Clarke, she was really good in season one and I also liked her in season two. I think the problem now is the script and the storyline.
