Penny Dreadful II: Take Me To Church

Thanks Theda. Mostly posting so I can keep track, but...

So I've really enjoyed the first two so far, but what's up with Dorian? So far in season 2 it still feels like Dorian's character is out of place and has little-to-nothing to do with the rest of the plot*. He's a pretty boy who is down for whatever sexually; fine. But what does it have to do with anything else that's going on? I'm hoping that changes soon because I would hope they've planned something and I find all of the other character's stories interesting. I feel like the actor is fine and just isn't being given much with the role yet.

*just like in season 1

I suspect he will continue being hung up on Vamessa and will eventually go after her again. But, I think he will (probably unwittingly) do so in a way that benefits the Kali and Lucifer. It's a pretty simple way to tie him to the main plot, rather than having him as this dangling thread.

Can someone remind me, did we actually see his portrait last season? Or did he just stand in front of it and it was off-screen?

He just stood in front of it and it was off-screen (I think). I think you're right Helena, Dorian will probably endanger Vanessa unwittingly as she admitted she is not the woman she wants to be when she is with him and through sex, bad things come to the surface for Vanessa. I used to really like their pairing, because there's romance and the supernatural to it, but it's mostly erotic; whereas Ethan and Vanessa seem bound together somehow; remember the card he picks at the very start of the show? The Lovers and he is also a protector. He has dedicated himself to protecting Vanessa and I think that's really, really beautiful.

O god, I've turned into a massive fan girl lmao.

From the last thread

Yeah Dorain is the odd man out. He doesn't fit within the group; he was never brought in the same way Ethan was. Obviously, being Dorian Grey there is more to him than meets the eye, but the writers haven't really explored that and how it might help or hinder the group at large.

I agree. At the moment, he is the odd one out and it would be great if he was connected to the main group more, but no doubt he will be.

Anyone seen any of the clips of the creepy witch from the 3rd episode? Looks great. Excited for Tuesday!

Very interesting article that. Has me excited for the rest of this season.

The article is also worded in a way that makes it seem there will be more seasons. Obviously I expected it to go beyond 2 if this one was a success, but does anyone have any idea how many we should expect?

I think Showtime will ride this one as far as they can. I expect at least 5 seasons.

5 seasons of this?!?!!? *cries* Yes please.

I think me and thee both seem to have a bit of a case of over-enthusiasm for this show :p oh well, not ashamed, it's a great show that seems to be improving in quality.

I think 4/5 seasons sounds about right though.

Dexter was part of the "etc". It maintained quality through 4 seasons (even though the 3rd season was not great), but after that it was absolutely terrible. And probably has the worst finale ever.

1, 2, 4 were great. 7 was good. 3 and 5 were ok. 6 and 8 were horrible.

Edit: Never seen Homeland or Weeds.

I don't know, just my opinion, but I'm not really sold on the actor playing him. He's supposed to be an irresistable sex God that can turn Josh Hartnett gay, just not feeling it with this dude.

Kali's minions look like they're on loan from Dracula, and for all I know, they probably are (but I don't really have a problem with it).

Anyway, thought the ep was really good, though I did think Joan was really harsh on Vanessa when she refused to spend her life in an isolated cottage in a marshland handing out herbs and cutting out unwanted babies to a bunch of ungrateful townsfolk. Also, I always thought Vanessa's quest to save Mina was driven by a mixture of guilt and love rather than some vain desire to be a heroine in her quest to save Mina.

Very enjoyable episode. As usual with this show it plays on traditional horror movie tropes, in this case the mob of angry villagers come to burn out the monster/witch. The acting was very fine with the exception of the hissing witches. It's also good to see that the West Country in ficitional Victorian England is pretty much identical to todays...yaaar.
