Feelings about specific storylines

Everyone I watch the show with likes to compare the quality of the storylines every season. Wanna see what the general consensus on the forums are regarding them in S5.

For me, I am:

Utterly bored of Meereen

Loving Arya/Stannis/Jon/Tyrion

Just recently started liking Kings Landing

Supremely, beyond any doubt disappointed with Dorne (except Doran and Hotah, I do like those two portrayals)

And I'm going to wait on Winterfell until I see how Stannis (and/or) Brienne get involved.

You guys?

Meereen is okay. I'm ready for Dany to marry Hizdahr and for Tyrion and Jorah to get there and speed things up.

Dorne has been mostly disappointing but after rewatching last week's goat rodeo of a fight scene, I'm actually sort of happy it unfolded so quickly/disastrously, because now Doran and Areo will, hopefully, force all the involved parties have a much-needed time-out and then we can get down to the business of Doran being awesome and telling everyone how it is. I actually like Trystane. I am curious to see if Uncle-Father Jaime will tell Myrcella he is her Uncle-Father.

Brienne and Podrick are pretty engaging. She seems like her sanity is slipping, and I'm nervous that she will do something crazy in pursuit of killing the Boltons and Stannis that will get Podrick killed.

Arya's storyline is fantastic, in the most literal sense. It has a very Guillermo del Toro feel, which I love. I have found some of her material to be among the most unsettling in the entire season.

Tyrion is just as he's always been, which is to say uniformly great, although predictably so.

I disagree vehemently with the people who hate Sansa's story. To me, it is by far the centerpiece of this season, and I think the changes that brought her to Winterfell were not only necessary and an improvement on the novels, but will engineer more dynamic character development than people seem to want to believe. Enthralling, terrifying and heartbreaking.

Jon has gone from strength to strength. There hasn't been a dull moment in his storyline.

Meereen is interesting,

Same as OP, love everything about Arya/Stannis/Jon and Tyrion,

KL has always been interesting, I love all the plotting from Cersei/Margaery to High Sparrow/Littlefinger,

Winterfell has expectedly been good, the Boltons are the best villains.

Dorne has expectedly been poor. It has never interested me in the books either.

I have actually grown to like the Meereen plot minus offing Barristan.

Winterfell has been great, it's just weird Sansa as Sansa Bolton.

Arya and Jon's character specific storylines have been phenomenal IMO.

KL is interesting but it just seems to be dredging on for me. Dorne is just yuck.

Minus some small choices, the whole North right now is just very interesting and Bran, the White Walkers/NK aren't even in the picture at the moment.

You guys?

Meereen

  • Yes, I'm almost bored of Meereen too. Luckily, as a book reader, I know there are great things coming. The show dropped the ball with the death of Barristan, but I understand it served a purpose. He was one of my favorites though.

Unpopular opinion: I ship Grey Worm and Missandei. It adds some romance into an otherwise romanceless place, especially when Dany's love life is not too exciting.

Arya

  • I wish they sped up her storyline this season. I understand they need to keep to pacing, but man, it can drag. The setting of the HoBaW is interesting enough, so I'm not too disappointed.

Stannis

  • I loved Stannis in the books, I love him in the show. I love Stannis-at-the-Wall scenes; in fact, the whole Northern theatre is interesting. I love that they're trying to up-play Shireen. She's adorable :)

Jon

  • I'm not a fan of the Hardhome storyline. I understand that it'll make for a good battle scene, it makes Jon a good leader, and it makes the wildling storyline more personal for him - BUT this happens at the sacrifice of some key wildling female characters, one of the strongest elements of their culture. It keeps Tormund and his member in the loop of things, but I was looking forward to "wildling princess" scenes.

Tyrion

  • I'm undecided. On one hand, Tyrion's storyline has more brevity to it since most of the moping is taken out, and his partnership with Jorah is brilliant. #Jorian4Lyfe. On the other hand, Tyrion was supposed to lead up to the Griffs, and his storyline suffered a little for it.

King's Landing

  • Undecided here too. Firstly, I thought Cersei would be more wild this season. She seems more cool, clam, collected, and calculating than ever before. In the wake of the death of her father and son, I had hoped that she would be completely distraught. Sure, she's making bad decisions like allowing the Faith Militant to storm the city, but I want more emotion. That's the Cersei we all want.

Tommen is great as a clueless, shy king. The antithesis of Joffrey.

The Faith Militant storyline ... eh. I wish they had followed it more closely to the books, because the show's rendition is a little unbelievable.

Adultery charges would have been more believable than homophobic charges against Loras. Pros: It gets Loras in the loop of things. Cons: It's such a simplified storyline that I doubt the writers put much effort into it. Plus, Margaery sleeping with others in much more scandalous.

Dorne

  • The horrific failure that is Dorne this season can all be rooted back to the decision to eliminate Arianne as Doran's heir and replace her with Trystane. That was such an important part of Dornish culture, and one of the central reasons Dorne stands out above other kingdoms.

Ellaria is ridiculous. Instead of wanting to proclaim Myrcella queen, they want to kill her, simply as revenge. I recall Oberyn saying, "We don't kill little girls in Dorne." Great. The writers anticipated a huge crowd support of Dorne, but instead they've written Ellaria and the Sand Snakes as impulsive, hypocritical characters - nevermind the acting abilities.

Areo Hotah's pretty cool. I wish Doran had more lines.

Riverlands

  • *sobs*

This would have made such a better storyline. We don't need to send Jaime to Dorne to help the audience get adjusted to a new location (one of the reasons they sent him there). Where are the Tullies? They didn't all die. It was Jaime's shining moment: bloodlessly ending a siege. It keeps the Freys in the show (and people love to hate them), and it sets the stage for further Northern revenge. I know the show didn't handle Edmure and the Blackfish well, but I'd rather see lackluster writing of the Tullies than this ridiculous Dorne storyline.

Perfect entryway for Lady Stoneheart.

Vale/Winterfell

  • Despite plot holes in Littlefinger's maneuverings, I don't mind this storyline. It's believable that Littlefinger could sell the marriage of Sansa Stark to the Boltons, and even to Cersei. It's a win for the Boltons, it's a win for Littlefinger. Maybe a win for Stannis.

I miss the lords of the Vale, but this is a much more interesting, engaging storyline.

The Boltons become more detestable every episode, and I love it. Ramsay is the new Joffrey. He's abominable. I love his face. I want to smash it in. He's great!

I wish we had more Roose Bolton.

Haters gonna hate. Sansa in Winterfell is a great storyline. I don't know what's going to happen next, and it's great.

This season has fallen short on action and passion. Some of these storylines can't be fixed. But Dorne/Jaime/King's Landing have some serious fallthroughs that could have been easily avoided.

Meereen and Wintetrfell are my two least favorite story lines. or more specifically, Meereen and Sansa.

I get it, Deanerys is "growing up". Yawn... time to speed things up now. Any day Tyyrion, any day now!

Sansa... grrr... I hated her character from day 1. I even just re watched season 1, episode 1 and realized that I really, truly do hate that character; a prissy, whiny little brat. Makes me somewhat glad to see her abused and misused season after season, but not enough to keep me engaged and giving a rat's ass about what will happen to her.

Eddard was pretty much the reason I liked the Starks to begin with and then Jon and Arya came into their own later on. Catherine, Rob, Sansa and Bran were really not worth the effort that went into writing them.

Arya & Stannis: Their storylines are a drag and moving slow as molasses

Brienne: Homegirl's got nothing to do

Dorne & Jaime: Everything failed here, easily the worst storyline in the show's run

Sansa: Feels incredibly hollow and empty without the Northern Lords, spearwives, etc, and that's not even taking into account *that* scene.

Jon: Aces, keep up the good work.

Cersei: Decent enough, mostly thanks to Olenna, but lacks momentum and build-up

Tyrion: Probably one of the best right now, along with Jon's

Dany: I don't even care

It's probably better to judge every storyline after the season but so far this....

Agree with you about Jon,Stannis and the Wall in general. There wasn't any dull moment, but wish there was more scenes like Mel/Aemon for example.Aemon was talking about Dany and there was room and time to do some short scene at least about prophecies.Shame.Jon&Stannis was great. We'll se what's coming for Team Dragonstone, because Jon is going to Hardhome.I'm pretty hyped about HH(WW and stuff) and Daznak's so hopefully,it's gonna be good.

Arya:Is slowly progressing, but I like it.Hall of Faces was amazing and Maisie is just better and better."Needle" scene was amazing.

Meereen:Along with the Wall my favourite,it's rather interesting(not a drag) and Daznak's is on the horizon.Curious to see Tyrion/Dany dynamic on the show. It's unpopular opinion, but I really like GW and Missandei romance.Daario is rather dull.

Dorne&Jaime: is so far a big dissapointment, but there are 4 other episodes left in this season...I'm patiently waiting for something good coming out of there like more of Doran and Areo Hotah.

KL.Godo but that was expected.Love Olenna,High Sparrow,Margaery combo love this.

Winterfell:Suprisingly it's positive.Some terrific acting there(Alfie,Iwan,Sophie,Michael),but that scene ughhh.

BriPod:Not a fan of this, but we'll see what's coming up next for them.

Meereen is OK. I think they're doing the best they can with it, considering the mess it is in the books.

Arya has been pretty good, but her story is moving at a snail's pace.

Stannis also is good, it seems the writers have become better at writing him, adding some little humor in him, and also Stephen Dillane is continuously great as this character.

The Wall has also been handled extremely well. They have made very clear I think the difficulties Jon is facing as Lord Commander. Kit Harington has fully immersed himself into the character now, and is miles better than how he started out.

Tyrion is probably the best. His interactions with Varys and Jorah are the most entertaining this season has to offer.

King's Landing is pretty decent. I think the writers always do a good job with it. Looks like it's their favorite place to write for. Lena Headey, Diana Rigg, and Nattie Dormer are all fine.

Dorne is supremely bad. They have made Ellaria and the Sand Snakes into a mockery, and suprisingly the duo of Jaime and Bronn has been kind of boring. The only thing saving it is DeObia Oparei, who's pretty intimidating as Areo so far, and also the little we've seen of Alex Siddig as Doran.

Winterfell is a mixed bag. Some ideas are great, but others, like that fucking terrible scene, are not. Just have to wait until we see how it plays out. The acting is great in it, with Alfie, Sophie and Iwan impressing more and more.
