A Post Apocalyptic Compilation

This is a thread dedicated to my favorite genre.

I know I havent seen everything and im always on the look out for stuff examining life after the breakdown of society so this thread is for recommendations.

TV Shows, Video Games, Books, Movies, or anything else are welcome.

I'll start with:

The Road, this is probably in a class all by itself. It is GRIMM!

It differs from most any other in that there's really no badass hero. Nobody kicking ass and beating up bad guys with karate kicks. Just a guy and his kid barely hanging on to life.

But I do enjoy the kickass hero post apocalyptic stuff too like the Walking Dead, I thought Book of Eli was really great. I even like Waterworld and the Postman

Mad Max is classic and I'm excited for the new one.

For video games, Last of Us and Fallout come to mind as highly enjoyable.

I'm a fan of the post-apocalyptic fiction, and enjoyed most of the stuff you've mentioned.

For recommendations, I thought the movie Carriers with Chris Pine was decent, if you haven't seen it.

Years ago I read a book in the Blade series by David Robbins. After a search on Goodreads, I think the one I read was called Vampire Strike.

However this is not the vampire hunter Blade from the comics/Wesley Snipes movie. This is a post-nuclear war world, where some order has remained, but the war led to various mutations in both humans and animals. The vampires in this book are a result of this war. Blade is the leader of a special forces unit that are sent on various missions to help out people in need. At least that's what I remember. I also remember that a member of Blade's team is a mutant named Grizzly, because he kinda looks like a bear. (He is basically Wolverine with real claws)

Probably a corny read, but more fun that most other post-apocalyptic literature.

The Stand by Stephen King made an impression on me when I read it as a kid, Lucifer's Hammer is also a great read. Both deserve adapting into decent movies IMO.

Film wise I'm a Terminator tragic, friggin love the first one, David Cameron can make as many terrible blue alien movies as he likes I'll always respect the crap out of him for that film.

Sorry but David Cameron is too busy screwing over Scotland, again. James Cameron on the other hand is hard at work on those blue alien movies. :P

Aw jeez where's my face palm emoticon when I need one?? Reading too much political stuff recently I guess.

I never read the Stand but I quite enjoyed the 90s mini series even though some call it cheesy.

It was kind of lame. They need to make a movie that depicts the full depravity of Randall Flagg, Trashcan man and The Kid. Is also a thing that CGI has been a game changer with respect to making epic end of the world movies, unfortunately most of them have been terrible drivel like 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Deep Impact, Armageddon etc.

Richard Matheson's I Am Legend. Sort of vampire/zombie cross as I recall, although I've not actually read it.

I have, I am Legend is an absolute must read if you enjoy post apocalyptic fiction. Don't bother with any of the film adaptations, which all change the ending (and the ending is the best part).

Other solid Post-Apocalyptic stuff:

Wool by Hugh Howey

Zone One by Colson Whitehead

Can be fun if you are in the right mindset but not really uplifting

The Day After

Threads (BBC)

Testement

Where the wind blows

I was too afraid when I was a kid to watch The Day After. In fact I hid in my room the 2 nights it was on TV, not wanting to be anywhere near a TV even if it was on a different channel or turned off.

About fifteen years after it came out, I caught Testament on cable. I flipped on it and it was about 10-15 minutes into the movie. I didn't know what it was called or what it was about. I was however drawn to the performances. My dear lord, that movie...it didn't actually horrify me or depress me, but some combination of both that was 10 times worse than either. I was haunted by this movie for days, and still am if I think about it too much. If I saw this as a child I believe it would have permanently damaged me.

I hear that Threads is even worse (more intense), I'm not going near it.

So on the lighter side of post apocalyptia, I'll contribute:

Last Man on Earth - recent series, you may all ready be watching it. First season is complete, it's been renewed for season 2.

Night of the Comet - Pure 80's cheesefest, but so good. The movie was made campy on purpose, but I think even in moments when they were trying to be serious they still couldn't pull it off. A comet flies by, incinerated most of the people on Earth. A scant few who were in lead lined shelters survived, but if the survivors weren't completely shielded and air tight they begin to turn into zombies. A pre Star Trek: Voyager Chakotay is in it.

I agree, but I did catch the 1964 movie The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price not too long ago. Even with the changed ending I liked the movie, but I also enjoy watching Price in just about anything.

I'm wondering if I should try The Omega Man if I understand going in it's not going to end like the book.

The Will Smith I am Legend I hated the theatrical ending, the alternate ending made it better but still not good enough. I can't watch that movie again though because the dog :crying:
