Tapatalk has been disabled until he traffic on the boards become less.. for the same reason, we've been in performance mode for quite some time. As these two things began around the same time, I guess they will end at the same time as well..

So another three weeks or so, I guess, until tapatalk will function again

Tapatalk doesn't play terribly nicely with high traffic situations. In my general experience, a single Tapatalk connection, due to the way it queries data, tends to eat about the same amount of resources as 3-4 normal browser connections. Which means 100 Tapatalk users hitting the site at once is roughly akin to 300-400 normal browser users.

In short: the servers become dark, and full of CPU contention.

More solutions are being investigated before the next season, but changing anything on the site during the season is a recipe for disaster. (We've learned that the hard way in years past.) So the site configuration gets pretty well locked down as the season goes live, and notes get taken for changes post-season. :)

I should add that once we upgrade to IPB 4 (which is also something we decided would be too dangerous during the season and unfortunately it wasn't ready in time to do it before), we may not keep using Tapatalk since IPB will be fully responsive and mobile-ready. But its something we have to discuss further, given the resource-intensive nature of Tapatalk.

Hmm.. I had no idea that a tapatalk connection took so much more memory than a browser-connection, and so I'd completely understand. Though I must say that the feature I find most usefull about tapatalk was the facrt that you could make the settings so that you would get a message when someone responsed to a thread/forum you had subscribed to, mentioned you in a post (only if the @ was in front of your username), send a personal message, or quoted you.

But the connection thing might also explain why, during the first few weeks of show-season when the forum wasn't in performance mode 24/7, tapatalk was unable to load pages that the internet browser had no trouble loading :)
