Video Game Thread v.416: Beta Release

Elite Dangerous' big 1.3 update is in beta now. The changelog is pretty massive. I wasn't a backer, so I can't join the beta, but I'm liking everything I see there a lot. The one exception is that I see they are adding a 10% penalty on resales of ship modules, which makes a lot of sense, except for the fact that there's still no module inventory. Which means there's no way to switch around a ship's configuration without paying that penalty every time you switch. Regardless of whether the devs want to add industry and a real market (and I think they really need to now that missions seem fixed), I think they gotta add an inventory system just for this.

Meantime, I played a lot of The Secret World over the weekend when I wasn't at BBQs. I'm really having a lot of fun, although I just got to the second main area (Savage Coast) and realized that my build is actually pretty bad and I need to change my deck around. I'm really liking the writing, atmosphere, and all the non-combat quests (some of those investigation ones are freaking hard though, and there have been a few where I needed to just look up hints). I wish there was better use of instancing though, so that I could see changes based on my actions. Stuff like, there's a quest to put symbols on a church fence to keep zombies out of graveyard, but after the quests, there's still zombies there. Fortunately though, few of the quests are really about change like that (usually its more about finding stuff out), so that doesn't come up too often. I usually get burned out on MMOs pretty quick, and that might very well happen here, but this seems so single-player focused that I just might make it far.

The immortally good Anachronox made Wikipedia's Featured Article list today, which is impressive.

2K are teasing a new game/franchise. Nothing is known about it so far except it involves some kind of futuristic megacity. It looks a bit Syndicatey, which is interesting.

I picked up Anachronox from GOG last year, but have not made it very far. I have it on the work computer and work has actually kept me busy enough as it is... so I've been somewhat limited. Maybe I'll download it at home one of these days and start it up again.

Otherwise, while waiting for Arkham Knight I have fired up Destiny again and have been playing a Hunter. (Had a pair of Legendary hunter boots drop for my Titan months ago and just never got around to leveling her.) I've had a lot of fun. I also transferred over a Legendary scout rifle that I had on the Titan (mainly have used Auto Rifles with him.) I ran my first Strikes with the hunter last night (she was already level 21 and almost 22 just based on the boots) and lead in kills for the first time ever. I don't know if that was a function of my Titan or the fact that I chose to use an auto rifle with him over the scout rifle. :dunno: Anyways, its some good mindless fun for the casual amount of play that I enjoy with it while I wait to don the cape and cowl one last time.

Man, how cool would this be as a VR game?

http://www.gameplanet.co.nz/news/g5565093201029/BioShock-vets-unveil-Perception-a-horror-adventure-in-which-you-cant-see/

BioShock vets unveil Perception, a horror adventure in which you can't see

Perception is being billed as first-person narrative horror adventure for PC, in which a young blind woman must solve mysteries and escape a deadly presence – all without the ability to see.

Fortunately Cassie – the game’s blind heroine – possesses extraordinary hearing and so can ‘see’ using echolocation. Every sound she makes creates a visual for the player.

That looks fucking AWESOME! I'll have to get someone to play it with me, as I still haven't been able to beat Alien: Isolation or Dead Space 2, though.

To quote the character from the trailer "Oh hell no!" I don't need any assistance with pooping.

Fired up TIE Fighter again. It's still got that old magic. And also that tendency for you to win and then die whilst flying back to base because you clip another TIE Fighter and your fragile spaceship blows up instantly.

To be honest I don't think I could handle playing this game for more than about 10 minutes, in a fully lit room, during the day, with joyful happy music playing, and cute puppies frollicking.

But for horror enthusiasts, being completely immersed in VR playing as a blind person sounds like a bit of a wet dream, and not of the pee in your pants kind of wet. Though maybe the horror enthusiasts like peeing in their pants and that's why they play horror games.

Haha, yes! I tried my hand at Alien Isolation, and I gave when I got stuck and really didn't wish to replay previous part in order to get unstuck.

Occasionally I do like playing survival horror games. I've played all 3 Dead Space games, Doom 3, and AvP 2. That's about it.

Betting on this being XCOM 2.

XCOM would make sense given that fake website. After all,

EXALT wasn't conclusively destroyed, and the destruction of one ship likely wouldn't have stopped the aliens for good. And this seems like something either one would do.

June is going to be a fun month. Elder Scrolls Online, Payday Next gen version (more like the PC version) and Arkham Knight....Going to be a lot of fun.

Add Witcher 3 with so much content, The Show still being an addicting game. Some good times.

Hey you were right:

In XCOM 2, the roles have been reversed, and XCOM is now the invading force. They are hampered by limited resources and must constantly evade the alien threat in their new mobile headquarters. Players must use a combination of firepower and stealth-like tactics to help XCOM recruit soldiers and build a resistance network, while attempting to expose the evil alien agenda and save humanity. XCOM 2 will introduce gameplay features such as procedurally-generated levels, which will make each experience unique to the player, as well as offer a much deeper level of modding support. Additionally, XCOM 2 will offer a variety of new content including five updated soldier classes, increased soldier customization, more alien and enemy types, evolved tactical combat and more.

Is it me, or does this trailer really make you look like the bad guys? (Not that I mind)

I mean, you're attacking a ostensibly utopian post-peace community, so yeah. On the other hand, Ethereals can explicitly mindcontrol people and snakemen are back! Fuck yeah.

e: I didn't see MECs anywhere though. :( I'll miss punching aliens through walls. Announcement says five classes: looks like sniper, grenadier, some kind of melee guy, and a drone dude/controller?

They released a Lego Minecraftish game! Downloading it now. I understand you can load in lego sets that you would buy in stores and place them in your world. I'm not sure what the selection is right now but if they eventually add all the pirate and castle lego kits from my childhood I will be so happy.
