Give Lancel some slack

Witch

Recommended Posts

A lot of people seem to hate his character, but I can't help to pity him. He was a kid, was manipulated into sex and murder, yet he regrets this actions. Sure, he's a religious fanatic, but I think he's trying to do the "right" thing, the guilt traumatized him. Any Lancel sympathizers out there?

You mean show-Lancel or book-Lancel? I haven't seen any Lancel hate to be honest. I think some show fans don't like the Sparrow because they're homophobic.

Book Lancel, Show Lancel is insipid.

Who doesn't like lancel? I wouldn't even call him a fanatic, he was manipulated into kingslaying by means of sex. He fell in love with a bitch who used him and dumbed him when she grew bored. He's severely injured in the blackwater bay battle, finds himself in a terrible state seeks forgiveness and now devoted himself to a cause that forgave him, accepted him and gave him purpose.

Lancel is a sweetheart

I've found people who dislike him after the walk, or for refusing to marry and secure an alliance.

I disagree that Lancel was a victim. I believe he is responsible for his actions, and honestly, I think he agrees with me.

I like Lancel in that he has seen the error of his ways and is attempting to rectify them. I don't have a huge problem with the HS and the Faith. I understand some people may be coming at it from a different direction, having a different view of the sexism, and beliefs about homosexuality. I certainly don't believe that Lancel is a foam at the mouth "fanatic". I'm starting to not like that word because it seems it gets thrown around carelessly.

Those are really silly reasons. You would think that he was tired of being a pawn and decided to choose his own way. I'm curious to see what he and the rest of the Sparrows do.

I dislike Lancel a lot. Sure, he's been taken advantage of, and he's been through some really awfull stuff topped by a near death experience, but I find his remorse and "redemption" shallow and egocentric in nature: all about his so-precious soul, nothing about caring for other people.

I particularly disliked how he identified with Joffrey in abusing Sansa and even more than that, I dislike his treatment to his wife Amerei. His attitude is practically "she can go fuck herself for all I care", no consideration whatsoever about what she wants. In a sense, he is the anti-Tyrion, but not in a good way, mind you.

Good point. In the books, has the faith said something about homosexuality? I don't recall reading about it.

No I hate Lancel.

He knew Cersei and was stupid enough to get mixed up with her.

He helped kill the king who was awesome.

He tried to act like a tough guy to Tyrion (yeah big man threatening/trying to bully a dwarf) then wilted like a flower with the slightest pressure from tyrion.

He is/was a traitor to pretty much everyone who ever showed him some fellowship.

He could have been a loyal true squire to Robert and Robert would have treated him well and showed him a good time. Big Bad Bobby B knew how to reward good service and how to have a good time.

Once he has an awesome castle with a hot freak for a wife he is a little cry baby and spends his time being a sulky little churchy church instead of trying to get Gatehouse Ami knocked up. His wound was a stab to the side. No way that leaves him with erectile dysfunction. He just made a decision to be a bitch, its not medical.

I literally see zero redeeming qualities in Lancel. He went from being a traitorous squire to a d-bag false knight to a religious zealot all while screwing over everyone who gave him a hand the whole way.

I don't remember anything specifically, but I imagine they look askance on it and preach against it, while probably not making it a capital crime. Much like the Catholic Church in medieval times.

I pretty much dislike Lancel, though I feel a bit guilty about it. Not too much, though. He's gotten himself into a bad situation largely through bad decisions. He's easily led, beginning with Cersei. The real thing that messed him up wasn't under his control, though; it was Tyrion threatening him with exposure, which he lacked the maturity to deal with.

Turning his back on Ami and joining the Holy Hundred show how messed up he remains. I think that Martin is using him as an example of one variety of religious extremism with his all-night vigils in the chapel and mortifying the flesh.

(Woo-hoo, finally reached 5000 posts. Took long enough.)

They have always been against incest and polygamy. I guess homosexuality completes the trifecta.
