Dany's Ruling Skills

Recommended Posts

Hey again guys!

On the forums there are a lot of hate on how Dany will be an incompetent ruler. Ageon I was one of the only last surviving Targaryens after the Doom. After he conquered Westeros, he was a relatively good ruler.

He came there from Dragonstone with only his 3 dragons, his sister and parents (?).

Then how come people still think that Dany, the ruler of Mereen, and advised by people like Barristan and possibly Tyrion layer on will be an incompetent leader? She even has an army of Unsullied and Sellswords.

Or is it that Westeros has never seen dragons before, and were too scared of Aegon? Explain!

Thanks for any feedback!

I think battle and war is her field like Aegon's was. War and leadership are different things

People are too harsh on daenerys. Her leadership in meereen could be considered successful. After all everyone desired war and blood, yet she managed to get peace even if it was temporary.

She didn't handle the situation with yunaki well and that was her fault. She negotiated too much and bent too much and so they took advantage of her.

She can't balance leadership and conquering very well

Aegon I was a good ruler because he knew politics not because he had dragons. Dany is too idealist. Aegon I knew how to deal with the people he conquered. She wants to abolish slavery from Slaver's Bay that doesn't something Aegon would do imo. Aegon I was a Valyrian and foreigner to 7K but he converted to Seven he took a house sigil like every other noble houses of Westeros (Valyrian nobles did not have house sigils) in order to look like less foreigner. Dany wants to annihilate culture of the people of Mereen.

Ruling and conquering are 2 very different things. Some are good at ruling but not conquering, some are good at conquering but not ruling and some are good at both. She struggled as Queen of Meeren, but she'll probably learn from her mistakes and do a better job with Westeros.

Once again too harsh.

She opened the fighting pits as a way to follow their traditions.

She ate the food they ate.

Spoke the language the spoke.

Married a noble of their culture.

Let them keep their tokars and wore one herself.

Surrounded herself with a lot of meereense. She doesn't try and annihilate their culture.

The only thing she broke in terms of culture is slavery.

Fighting pits : Where slaves fight each other.

Tokar: Master's garment, a sign of power and wealth. aDwD

Slavery is their culture. Abolishing slavery is leaves meaningless fighting pits and tokars.

Wait a minute, Aegon the Conquer's family had been living on Dragonstone for at least 2 centuries before he conquered. So not really a forgeiner. NOt to mention he went to the Citadel and stayed with the Redwynes before making his conquest. Before he sent out his ravens didnt he and his sisters go to the sept and pray to the 7? So from my understanding he and his sisters were already familiar with the 7 and might have been practicers before the conquest.

WHile the previous Targaryen had looked East not West, Aegon had been making plans to conquer Westerors long before he did. The Painted Table is a testimony to that. Rhenys with her love of flying probably helped.

It also helped Aegons case that once he conquered he didn't go around changing a bunch of shit and abolising things in the kingdoms that he didnt like because he felt they were wrong or bad. It also helped that he set up councils that would help him rule much in the manner of those that come before him according to the customs of the different realms.

Dany on the other hand not only doesnt take advise well, listens only if it falls in with her thoughs of how things should be done. But the whore of the waterfont in Volantis was right, dany is a monster because she is too idealist and doesnt have a plan on how to change things once she's thrown the pebble into the pond. Dany has spent so much time just reacting to the situations that shes be trust in that she's not accustomed to planning, tactics, stragetgy or such. While it's impressive what she accomplished with little to no training in ruling.YEt but the same token, has anyone really thought about the titles the blue ppl from the house of the undying named Dany?

Slayer of Lies, Daughter of Death.... I mean with a title like Daughter of Death and Bride of Fire(fire being the second most destructive force on the planet next to water), there is on way that Dany is going to make a good ruler.

Dany's ruling skills.. aren't as terrible as a lot of people think.

She has made mistakes out of cultural ignorance/naiivite. But she has done a lot of good in Meereen, perhaps more than any other ruler on Planetos.

Banning slavery and having tough consequences for rape are very good.

Im not as familiar with the books, so idk if the conflict is different there, but I think it was wrong of her to throw Jorah out. Sure he spied on her originally, but hadn't he proved his loyalty? Wouldn't the "big thing" to do would be to take him back?

Well no. There are thousands of slaves whos lives were worse than pit fighters who are now free and happy.

And most of the pit fighters were free men volunteering themselves to fight as a chance for money and glory. The rest were yunkai lords slaves, but that doesn't count because we're talking about meereen.

And your actually only proving my point that she went out of her way to please nobles by keeping their traditions intact

Dragosstone was part of Valyrian Freehold not a part of Westeros. Yes he was acustomed to Faith of Seven but his conversion wasn't a religious act but political one. Dany on the other hand doesn't want to be one of them she wants them to be like herself.

No, difference with book and show was he didn't actually apologize about him spying.

She said he would come back into her service if she apologized and he basically refused. It was only when she realized the extent of his betrayal (Rhaego, the fact he didn't stop spying until qarth) did he actually start to show remorse

I think some readers get annoyed by Dany's idealism.

She does make mistakes. She's always torn between conciliation and ruthlessness, and this leads her to be a bit erratic.

And yet, it's easy to overlook how brillant she can be. Some decisions show her to be wise beyond her years.

More importantly, Meereen is a "test run" for Westeros. It teaches her everything she needs to know.

Beyond the idealism, I think some readers are also annoyed by her storyline. Just like some people get annoyed by Jon. They are the two characters who seem to "get it all" : magic weapons and/or pets, great advisors or tutors, and the possibility of being the ultimate savior.

In other words, it seems people can be annoyed by the fantasy-ish tone of her story arc, by contrast with the grittiness of others.

And of course, everyone wants her to get to Westeros, har har.

Reasons why Dany gets a hard time:

1. She didn't do what most readers wanted her to do, take off and bring fire to Westeros. Her entire storyline in ADWD was filler. It's to take up space. Originally the plan was to skip ahead a certain number of years, then GRRM changed the plan, and had to think up what all the characters were doing in the meantime. So he put Dany in a tight spot in Slaver's Bay, but the tight spot negated in many ways all the accomplishments she achieved in the first three books. Readers angry! Readers smash!

2. She's the blonde girl. Hate hate hate.

3. She bringing fire and blood. Some people are a little squeamish about fire and blood. Westeros needs to be saved by hugs and social justice. Maybe a few protests.

4. She makes mistakes, otherwise she wouldn't get into trouble, and there would be no drama. She is not perfect. So she takes the hits for not being the perfect ruler. When Dany makes mistakes, thousands of people die. It frustrates them because they feel so bad for all the innocent peeps.

5. Dany did not get a poli sci degree at Georgetown so she is the devil incarnate. She is not fit to be a ruler.

6. Dany executes innocent people by burning them alive without giving them due process of a trial. She is a human rights violator and a war criminal. Not fit to be a ruler.

7. She's not just blonde, she's rich, or would be, because she is from the right family.

8. She is part of the 1%.

9. She's a monarchist who oppresses the proletariat.

10. She has sex with the help that is dressed and acts like a pimp.

Yeah, show Jorah would've been forgiven by book Dany.

But once the freehold fell there is no more of Valyria. I get why he converted, it's very Henri Bourbon and his statement about Paris being worth a mass. I get that it was purely politial. However, but, comma, The Dragons still had contact with at least those there were in the crownlands. Also, Aegon and the last Storm King were allies against Volantis.

Not to mention if the Targs had wanted to they could have rebuilt the Free hold they were the only ones left with dragons. Most of the other daughters of the freehold looked to the Targs when Valyria was first destroyed. That is expect for Braavos.

My point that by the time that Aegon decided to conquer westeros he was more like a Hybrid of the Freehold and of Westeros customs.

Dany was a fine ruler, the problem was that she had self esteem issues and focused on her mistakes, if she had been more self confident and fun to read most people wouldn't have a problem with her. The two issues that she was dealing with were the sons of the harpy and the yunkish blckade/ invasion and she solved both of those problems until she was kidnapped by a dragon.
