Catelyn's Murder

Recommended Posts

We know the Freys and Roose Bolton committed horrible acts of murder when they killed Robb Stark and so many north men. But lets not forget Cat committed murder herself that night.

She murdered JingleBell who as far as we know didn't do anything wrong. He was just chilling at the wedding having a good time. I bet he was as surprised as anyone when so many people started dying. Cat took a blade and cut JingleBell's throat open, though he had done nothing wrong.

Why do people give Catelyn a pass for this act of murder?

She had already broken when she did that. Also she did what she said she'd do, she made a promise to Lord Walder and she followed through.

This. She did it after Roose stabbed Robb through the heart if memory serves.

It was just bad luck that he happened to be the one to get grabbed by Catelyn. I would have preferred Lothar Frey or Black Walder, or even the Lord of the Crossing himself, but unfortunately those bastards still live.

As to the act of murder, Catelyn gets a pass because, as Minsc pointed out, she was mad with grief; nobody really expected her to drop the knife and shrug it off. I'm glad she took one out before she 'died'; dim witted or no, a Frey is a Frey.

I disagree with "a Frey is a Frey" as some of them seem to be decent. But basically this. She was not herself. Sane Cat has limits, grief-stricken, broken, lost all reason to live Cat does not. Don't forget that with Robb died the likelihood of getting her girls back too. Without sons alive to give them headaches and maybe even beat them, why would the Lannisters bother to bargain with the widow of the north?

My Bet?

The Frey name will be extinct by the end of the series. It may survive in the female line and undoubtedly Lord Walder or one of his spawn has a bastard out there somewhere, but there will be no more Freys. The Twins will be burned down and the bridge will be unguarded. Whichever Stark/Tully ends up in control of the Riverlands will have the castle taken down stone by stone and the name Frey scrubbed from the history books.

Between Lady Stoneheart and Arya and the Brotherhood and the Blackfish and the other Riverlords and Littlefinger and Sansa and Nymeria and accidents and Frey on Frey inheritance crimes? They're doomed.

Yep. I'd like to see the nice ones survive and change their name. And I'd like to see The Twins get the Harrenhal treatment from Dany's dragons.

Yeah its too bad it had to literally be the ONLY Frey that had to be utterly and completely innocent of any wrong doing. I mean ANY other Frey would have been all good but it had to be the retarded uncle who shit himself?

I guess it added to just the nasty shock value of the scene.

She did also rip her own face off directly. Its hard to hold something against someone who just shredded their own visage with their bare hands.

Because Catelyn had nothing left to lose but her life. Robb was betrayed and murdered before her eyes and her knowledge was that Bran and Rickon had been murdered by Theon.

It was a last act by a desperate mother that had lost the protection and mercy that she thought she would be afforded to her only living son. Lord Frey denied her that.

Fair point. Jingebell probably deserved to live. But as much as I would have loved it to be Lothar, it wouldn't have been as effective. I think Jinglebell was a symbol of Cat's grief; if it were to be Lothar who was killed, it would certainly be vengeance, but poor Aegon Frey had nothing to do with it, and yet Catelyn didn't care. It was the beginning of Lady Stoneheart.

I'd like for the nice ones to survive, and carry on the name of Frey (preferably runnning things differently than the Walders). There's a nasty crop currently, and old Walder is an asshole pure and simple, but it's not my impression that they're all terrible people.

Granted, I know this isn't "that kind of story" (where the nice ones survive), but still. Just like some Starks of the past were ruthless, some Lannisters a generation or two ago were good people etc etc. A family is more than its current members, after all.
