Project Soli, Project Jacquard - does convenience have an end-point?

Project Soli is that wearable, but it’s not the wearable you might think it is. It’s not a watch; it’s you.

Google ATAP knows your hand is the best method you have for interaction with devices, but not everything is a device. Project Soli wants to make your hands and fingers the only user interface you’ll ever need.

To make that happen, Project Soli is really a radar that is small enough to fit into a wearable like a smartwatch. The small radar picks up on your movements in real-time, and uses movements you make to alter its signal. At rest, the hand is actually moving slightly, which end up as a baseline response on the radar. Moving the hand away from or side-to-side in relation to the radar changes the signal and amplitude. Making a fist or crossing fingers also changes the signal.

Controlling a smartphone via the sleeve on your coat isn’t something you can do — yet. If Google’s ATAP division has their way, we’ll all have the ability soon.

Your entire coat sleeve could be interactive, or just part of the pattern on it. If you wore a coat with repetitive squares, one could be receptive to touch. If that square pattern were instead stars, one or more of the stars could end up as your touch interface.

The simplest example of how Project Jacquard was useful in day-to-day life was with Google’s mobile music player. Via a touch or swipe either way, you could control the playback, track and volume.

On one hand, this would make you feel like a wizard. On the other, if we have become so lazy that the act of PRESSING A BUTTON is too much effort then I fear for the human race. Is there a point at which we should stop making things easier?

I can understand where there would be a practical application for those with limited movement, but for the public on a widescale basis? That I am not so sure about.
